Can someone shed some light of wtf happened to this guy in the last calendar year? The drop off level in just one season is stunning, and shocking. He's 31 years old and that's still very much a prime age for all-star caliber players. He's had no chronic injury history, or recent injuries. Forget about Portland Aldridge , but just last season he was a beast in the playoffs, and had back to back 40 point games against the Thunder while being a member of the Spurs. Just look at this video below from exactly one year ago today, and compare that with the current Aldridge, and its a drastic decline. What happened?

You know, the thing is that LaMarcus Aldridge was never particularly great at anything but scoring with that midrange post game. He wasn't terrible at the other stuff, but he was basically a middling rebounder, defender, passer etc. So that sort of player is particularly vulnerable to situation. In Portland they worked and really overused him for those couple of seasons when he put up near-superstar numbers on dicey efficiency. In San Antonio, with increasing competition for shots from Leonard and even up front from Gasol, the one thing he does well is being taken away, and the rest of his game really isn't very noteworthy. Kind of the Bosh effect, except Bosh eventually reinvented himself as a mobile perimeter big defender and continued to contribute that way.

Blake Griffin effect. He doesn't shoot threes, doesn't anchor a defense and isn't an elite distributor. He scores his points on toughly contested two point shots. Modern NBA has passed this kind of PF by. It's just not that effective.

I'm surprised people are so perplexed by this. He went from a team who's entire offense was built around him and where he was a high usage #1 option to a team where he was expected to fit in as a part of an established system and play as a second fiddle guy. That's not a winning combination if you want to continue being a statistically dominant player.

The game has changed so much before LaMarcus can use the 'age' excuse. This is now a game for 3 point shooters, quicker players, players than can play multiple positions. If we are in the 80's or 90's, he will still be one of the best but not in this new era of basketball.

Uh Blake is an elite distributor and an elite finisher and he shot 3s this year on respectable efficiency and volume.

Lamarcus Aldridge is totally different.

The game has changed for the worse for him, and fast. Another factor is his physical conditioning doesn't look the same to me.

he really does look terrible out there. kinda heavy and slow footed.

I his slump is a combination of many things. Change of roles on both ends, increased energy expended on defense, reduced usage, age related regression, poor point guard play, his heart condition, his weight, and just general lack of fire. I can understand him going into a shooting slump after all that, even if it may be a year long one.

What I don't understand is him missing wide open layups and him losing the ball everytime in the post. That's just not having your head in the game.
