This would hurt the Bulls, Magic, Nets and small market teams. Also hurt the competitive balance. The NBA already has major competitive balance issues they've been dealing with and it has gotten worse by the year. Like 3 teams in the entire league are good enough to win a title and this past year's playoffs were a total joke from beginning to end. A charade and basically a sideshow until the inevitable Cavs vs Warriors.

If they want the bottom teams to stay at the bottom even longer, then sure, overreact and fix the lottery odds so you have even more of a disparity across the league, and have it so the number of teams in the league no free agents ever wants to sign with grows and grows!

The one thing I hate about sports is whenever isolated incidents crop up, the leagues totally overreact and instead of a measured response, they take the extreme response so it "NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN!"

A brawl in Detroit??? Make it so if a player steps one foot out of the bench area, immediate suspension!

Sick of players getting technical fouls??? Make it so if you amass enough, you can get suspended in a playoff game!

One team massively tanked??? Let's screw the competitive balance of the league for everyone!

The league is tired of only being able to fix the top 3 picks. They want more control.

Awful move, a lot of things need to change in the NBA and this isn't it.

That rule already existed before the Malice at the Palace. Patrick Ewing, Allan Houston and Larry Johnson all got suspended for breaking it in the '97 playoffs.

1. Who's the 3rd team?

2. That rule was in place well before the brawl

Anyway, this is a terrible idea that will only keep bad teams bad for longer, make life harder for small market teams, and ruin what's left of competitive balance right now. But don't worry - Silver will continue to assure us that there's nothing wrong with a product where one team has the next 5+ championships on lock with no competition.

Yes fix it please, end tanking once and for all. If you finish 9th vs 15th you should have an equal chance of getting the first overall pick.

No it wasn't. The first implementation of it was in the Suns playoff series, I forget who they were playing. Spurs maybe?

Cavs, Warriors, Spurs.

Then they didn't enforce it, because no one got suspended for leaving the sideline area until that one Suns series.

This should be called the Hinkie rule. I can't see the majority of owners approving this though. It will be harder for bad teams to reset if they can't just bottom out for top picks. Really bad teams could be bad for a long time.

Who even cares about the lottery anymore, loyalty all but dead now.
There is a much bigger problem that needs fixing.

Not true.

Again, not true.

Ewing, Houston, John Starks and Larry Johnson were penalized under a league rule that prohibits players from leaving the bench area after an altercation begins.

I totally forgot about that, but I do not remember it even being an issue until many years later in that Stoudemire's Suns playoff series.

It definitely wasn't enforced as harshly or paid attention to as much until around that time and the Detroit brawl. I've seen many a playoff series and not once did an announcer ever go "Gotta watch out, leave the bench area and you'll be suspended!" And I've seen tons of players before then leave the bench area and not get suspended.

So maybe the rule was in place, but it 100% wasn't enforced as strictly until the Detroit brawl, that's for sure.

**** Hinkie and the Sixers. They could have just tanked silently but they had to make a big deal out of it. Now the NBA is going to implement some (Please Use More Appropriate Word) lottery reform because they got all upset in 2014. Even if this vote fails the fact that this is even being considered shows how badly the NBA is going to handle this

How often has it even needed to be enforced? Besides the Knicks and Suns incidents, the only other case I remember was the Pacers/Hawks brawl a few years ago - and Paul George and Rasual Butler didn't get suspended for leaving the bench because the league was scared off by the backlash they received for suspending Amar'e and Diaw.

None of the proposals in the article sound that extreme - and it's not just small markets that tank for high draft picks. I think it all seems like a step in the right direction and I like the no consecutive #1's rule for sure.

Well now, if there is a little scuffle and a player on the bench takes literally one step out of the bench area he's suspended, no questions asked. It was NEVER like that before Detroit. Used to happen all the time. They went way overboard with it and are ridiculously trying to treat players like robots with no leeway.
