Summer 2016: All Star game is totally reformed. No East-West teams anymore, and no fan votes for the starting 5 and coach selections for bench. This is what will happen:

All-star games are supposed to be about the best players in the game, and it's a shame when some scrub makes it over a much more deserving player, just because he plays for a certain side.

Getting rid of east/west was easily the best part of OP. Other than that, let's get rid of fan voting altogether. Let's face it, most fans probably shouldn't be dressing themselves in the morning, let alone having a say in the fate of other people's lives.

No player votes either. Let the coaches pick the teams playground style, and provide incentive for the winners(1 million each?). That is easily the best way to turn the game into something worth watching.

Fan votes are so silly, Zaza would make the team in this set up. Which has me thinking, the set up would probably kill Zaza-type votees after the first time. That's not what they really want to see.

Then again, we would probably have some trolls and a team full of Russians when they start getting involved in the voting as well.

Stupid, make a All Star selection a actual accolade for a players resume instead of how many 12 year old girls Beiber can get to vote you in.

The reform I would like is that players play as hard as they do in summer pickup. Summer pickup games are far more competitive and entertaining than the All-Star games these days.

This, how sweet would it be if there was a way to make a actual basketball game out of it. The best of the best going at it on both sides of the ball.

I know it won't happen cause it the grand scheme of things there's nothing to gain to risk injuries especially with older players but would be cool.

The only reform should be either put the All-Star break at the end of the season like the probowl but make it winner gets HC kinda how baseball used to. Or start putting incentives for players to do their best.

Picking less talented players to the all star game is not the revamping that tired old game needs.

I really can't see a way to make it more competitive. Players are basically just looking out at not being hurt. I can't say i blame them unfortunately. It really sucks for us as fans though, but what can you do. I simply can't see it working any other way.

Maybe something absurd like makin an under 26 and over 26 team would work. The young guys trying to show how good they are, and the "old" guys trying to show they are still the best in the league

How much money does the NBA make from All Star Weekend? I am sure they can afford some incentive to the players + fans

Here is what they should do:

1. Make the players and the coaches vote for all roster spots

2. Keep the rookie game the same but again offer $ incentive to the players and also donate money to charities

2. Clean up All Star Saturday with revamped events and increased amount of money given out as prizes to winners and charities
- Dunk contest needs to be completely reworked and made into an entirely more professional event
- D err G league players need to be included in the dunk contest to motivate the NBA players to step up their game
- Offer 250K (half of the ASG winners prize) to the winner of the dunk contest
- Replace the celebrity game with an NBA Legends game (last played in 1993)

3. Completely change up the All Star Game - (Detailed below)

New Ideas for All Star Game
- Choose captains and hold a draft for 3 player teams
- Hold a 3-3 tournament to see who would win
- Use 4 pt shots and emulate a lot of what the BIG3 is doing
- Make sure you have to clear the ball unlike in the BIG3
- Whoever wins splits 1.5M (each player gets 500K) with another 1.5M going to a charity of their choice
- NBA spends 3M to drastically improve the ASG

I think I should've stated more clearly this is more of a game thread, and less of a serious attempt to suggest a reform.

I don't get why people hate on fans voting. The players proved that they were even worse at it with people much less deserving than Zaza getting votes. I don't get this fan desire to care so much about all the best players in the game. I think fan vote should decide all 12 spots on each team. If the country of Georgia wants to see Zaza as an all-star, let him play.

My fun idea for it would be if you opened it up to former all-stars willing to play being eligible. What if Shaq and Barkley were still eligible to get voted in to the game? Would it not be fun to watch Barkley versus the Warriors players? You could expand the rosters as these players wouldn't play a lot of minutes. I personally don't care who "deserves" to play, how hard they play, or if the game is competitive. It is a fun exhibition game to celebrate the league. Let the players have fun and try new things in the game like 4 Point Shots and such.
