King of Empty stats

Post#1 » by 12footrim » Wed Dec 6, 2017 5:55 pm

I need some help, who are the all time kings of empty stat seasons?

Devin Booker last year for example was one of the more hollow stat lines I've seen. 22ppg and only a 14.9 PER /.53% true shooting both under league average.

Edit: Let me clarify. Guys that are getting all star appearances or averaging 20+ ppg but have like a PER of 15 or are shooting under .500 true shooting or whatever like Kobe was at the end. Basically anyone getting accolades or a #1 banana role that really can't credibly do it justice.

Tread carefully, because this will get locked if it turns into a player-bashing thread.

There is no such thing as "empty stats" - only context.

I don't think empty stats exist, only "incomplete stats".

I think this term is incredibly misused, too often referring to a good player on a bad team, like Kevin Love when he was in Minnesota.

If the stats are that empty, it will show in some advanced stats, like in your Devin Booker exemple (-2.3 BPM, .531 TS%). You will be able to see that the player is scoring a lot, but inefficiently. Or rebounding a lot, but that he doesn't contest shots or doesn't grab a lot of contested rebounds. It will show somewhere.

Empty stat guys to me are guys putting up huge numbers but their teams aren’t good.

Demarcus Cousins advanced stats and individual stats are generally strong enough that many see him as a top 10 talent but how many top 10 talents haven’t been able to lift their teams up and into even a low playoff seed? And he plays with Anthony Davis too. Of the superstar tier I think Cousins stats are a little inflated.

Not saying he’s not a top 20 talent but if you’re top 10 I expect you to lead your team into the playoffs.

20.6 ppg on 18.6 shots/game, .485 %TS on a 17 win Cavs team.

how, booker is a young improving player, 22ppg doesn't say all star, he is a good player, now if a guy was getting 30 a night and the team sucked that's different, I think the empty stats guys are the wiggins, barnes, of the world, guys who have played a few years or more and score but it doesn't translate to winning

Yeah, a 20-year-old kid is the king of empty stats.

I think you need a little more time in the league to claim that crown.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim. He averaged like 20 a game, but never took a team anywhere. Don't remember any clutch winning plays.

I always thought Kevin Love put up empty stats back in his Minnesota days.

And I’m not just saying that because he didn’t win, I just don’t think he had any impact in the game.

He mostly scored off spot up 3s or offensive putbacks, had a decent post game but doesn’t have the lift to finish strong at the rim and would often get rejected.

You’d figure a guy averaging 26 ppg, 14 rpg, 4 apg would be dominant but he wasn’t. He just never took over games like most stars do

Antawn Jamison
Ricky Davis
Andray Blatche
Glenn Robinson
Brian Geltzeiler: You see Mark Jackson getting a head coaching job as early as next year?

Adrian Wojnarowski: Not if people make calls on him. Not if an organization is doing their homework and knows all the things he brings with him.

Mitch Richmond never had a player better than Abdul-Rauf or Brian Grant as a #2 option on those Kings teams. Richmond player hard for those teams but they were so poorly ran. Even got them into the playoffs one year. Not his fault he got traded to a sideshow.

I see people mentioning guards and wings. Rightly so because they are more prone to chucking and inefficiency
What about an empy-stat big man? A big man inefficient volume scorer that can't defend nor contribute in any other meaningful way

I said empty stat seasons and it certainly was. He had no business being the #1 option last year. Maybe it's not his fault but it is what it was. That's all that was said, nothing about his future or potential.
