Why Aren't The Suns Being Talked About As A Max FA Destination?

Post#1 » by Scalabrine » Sun May 27, 2018 2:24 pm

By renouncing the rights to Alex Len and Elfrid Payton and not picking up the option of Alan Williams and then getting rid of one of Dudley, Chandler or Knight by either stretching or trading (perhaps by attaching picks 16 or 31) the Suns create enough space for a max contract in free agency and have a roster of:

Ayton/Chandler/Bender
James/Chriss/Bender
Warren/Jackson
Jackson/Booker/Daniels
Booker/Knight/Ullis

This depth chart assumes they move Dudley and draft Ayton. Does not include picks 16 and 31 or any other signings they could make with the MLE and exceptions.

This roster is tailor-made for a LeBron led team. Inside presence who can control the paint, run the floor, and shoot. An athletic young, do it all, lights out shooter and future all-star (Booker) and then shooters/slashers everywhere else.

When you factor in the history of success with the Phoenix medical staff, this seems like a team that can let LeBron age gracefully, while still having an extremely young core to mold and still compete into his twilight years.

For all we hear about him leaving Cleveland, and the amount of hype young/unproven teams like the Sixers and Lakers get as destinations, the Suns seem like a way better fit in terms of skill set of the existing players. Im surprised we don't hear/read more about them as an option...

Because people aren't clamoring to join a team who has a 25% winning record over the past ~3-4 years. No deserving max player is jumping on board until they see actual improvement. Look at Philly, they signed guys like Amir/Reddick to bloated 1-year deals because real max free agents weren't ready to commit themselves. Now, one year later after astronomical improvement, they are in the hunt for LBJ.

Whats wrong with PHX? I understand players not going to that losing culture as of late but the location itself is wonderful.

I didn’t really mean Phoenix was a bad spot. But if it’s not LA or New York I don’t see why a star would want to sign with such a **** team with a less than ideal marketplace to build their brand

Most young NBA players care about social scene of their city. Phoenix has nice weather, but you might as well sign in LA to either team if you’re gonna go to Phoenix.

This, on top of not having any pieces outside of Devin Booker, and bad management history.

At one point they had Dragic, IT, and Eric Bledsoe. IT and Dragic have both been in all star games since, and Bledsoe is a recognized talent, who they gave away for cap space. And both Dragic and Bledsoe were traded away after publically downing the team.

As a Minnesotan, when people talk about the awful cold in the north, I always wonder why Phoenix doesn’t get a similarly bad rap. I genuinely enjoy snow and cold and much prefer it to heat. My brother lived in Phoenix for a few years. I visited him in August one time and I swear to god I thought I was going to die. Give me 20 degrees and snow over 100+ heat any day.

Arizona is wonderful. It's even the ideal location if ever RealGM'ers decide to meetup or something...

More like 120. But it does have the advantage that you can leave during the summer.

No max free agent worth the max wants to sign with a team who's best attribute is always being in the bottom 7 teams and getting high draft picks who end up not being all that good.

They have to first show the ability to win some games, not even the playoffs, but close and hope they can do it before those so so rookies show they might be worth big money extentions.

Robert Sarver.
All human life on the earth is like grass, and all human glory is like a flower in a field. The grass dries up and its flower falls off, but the Lord’s word endures forever.

All they have to win and they will be a destination. Weather and young talent and lower taxes are all factor.

Next to $ Winning is the most important factor
