In an attempt to go younger and save on the luxury tax, Warriors owner Joe Lacob pushes through a shocking trade today sending Stephen Curry to the Utah Jazz for Donovan Mitchell, Ricky Rubio, Alec Burks, Tony Bradley, and two unprotected first rounders.
This would be a dream. Not only would the Warriors lose their sheen of inevitability in their march to a title, we’d also get back the old Curry as he’d pretty much have to carry the Jazz offense with 40 point performances night after night. And the defense would still be good enough with Gobert for them to be a legit contender on the back of that one creator.
Plus, if you squint a little bit, it almost makes sense from the Warriors point of view, right? You add depth and turn a 30-year old injury prone star into a 21-year old future superstar on a rookie scale contract under team control for at least the next 6 years. You save significant tax this year, and next year when the expirings run out, you save much more. Now you have plenty of money to re-sign Klay and Dray without going into repeater tax hell, and KD’s probably more likely to stay longer now that it can be completely “his team”.
I mean, you’d be stabbing the greatest player in the history of the franchise in the back and the fans would go ****, but it does make some sense. And from a dramatic point of view it’s an incredible story, right? Curry unleashed, going up against the snake that stole his team in the playoffs? You know he’d light up Oracle for 50 at least once in that away jersey. Anyway, that would make me an instant Jazz fan and about 50x more excited for the upcoming season. Your thoughts?
If I weren't a Jazz fan, that would be one of the greatest fanfics storylines possible in the NBA. But as a Jazz fan, I would likely be joining the riot on Jazz HQ if that went down. No disrespect to Curry as dude IS a top 5 type of player. But Mitchell would be joining him in terms of arguments in a year or two assuming trajectories hold. So doing, plus adding some of our depth AND unprotected picks? Dayum.....
