Manu - Considering Retirement.
Let me preface this by saying Manu Ginobili is one of my all time fav players. I have always thought he was criminally under valued.
Woj just published a follow up to last week's story that Manu is seriously considering retirement and is meeting with Pop this week.
Something about this is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
While Manu is FULLY within his rights to retire and forego the pay out on his last year, The fact that he is pondering this decision at the tail end of the off season is upsetting to me.
Had he told this to the Spurs in May, would they have prepared differently? Would they have tried to trade him somewhere he'd feel more valuable? Would they have looked to sign another wing player?
At this point, it feels like most teams are relatively set with their rosters, and now your last remaining on-court connection to the Glory Spurs, who ideally would help communicate to new players what the Spurs culture and expectations are, is talking about walking away.
Anyone else think the timing just sucks?

Manu is 41. This isn't drama, it's age.

So he didn't know how old he was 2 months ago?

Did he have to decide by then?

Re: More Spurs Drama - Manu
He did the same thing last offseason. He took a few months to rest and see how his body responded and if he still had the drive to play.
He's earned the right and the team has told him to take his time and make the decision when he's ready.
The fact that this qualifies as "Spurs drama" just tells you how good the organization has been at avoiding drama over the years.

My point is, a guy who's been with the organization THAT LONG, you'd think he'd want to keep them in the loop and say "Hey, just so you know ... im thinking about this, so if that affects your off season planning, I get it"

Yea I don't think this qualifies as drama. He just got back from a vacation in the Northwest. It's a tough decision. I am sure he wants to still play, but will his body let him? His family time? There are more things to think about than just "should I retire"

Re: More Spurs Drama - Manu
Manu makes $2.5M and the Spurs are over the cap anyway. His retiring/not retiring has no bearing on the salary cap, nor their ability to sign players during the FA period. It's not like they passed up some amazing wing just because they expected him to be back.
Manu is the man. Let him do what he wants without giving him crap.

I'm not saying it is a problem ... just something about it feels off to me
Like there's a lack of communication with the club and the team's longest tenured player

It's a massive life decision and he's one of the best players in franchise history, who cares if he takes a little extra time to figure it out?

He's been traveling, Pop had to deal with that Kawhi mess, then start with the USA team stuff, basketball without borders, etc... Even with all this, just cause Woj breaks the news today doesn't mean Manu & Pop haven't been communicating. I could almost guarantee they have been, just as TP was with Pop pondering his decision.
Also, I think bringing a guy like Belinelli back was also kind of their Manu insurance. Someone who knows the system already, and is familiar with what Pop wants.

Duncan announced his retirement in July. That was after opting in a couple weeks before. What do you have to say to that?
You would think he's no longer part of the Spurs' long-term plans that the Spurs don't really need to "prepare differently" whether or not he retires, no?

Manu has ruined his whole legacy by waiting two months.

He considered it last year, and signed his contract August 24. Which seems directly in line with this timing, no?

Maybe that's the case and I'm just disappointed that the guy I assumed would be the team leader is looking at walking away this close to training camp

He's 41 and everyone knows he considered retiring the last offseason. If the Spurs weren't prepared for it possibly happening this offseason, that's on them. And who says Manu didn't say he was gonna think things over this offseason to Pop and the front office either?
