RealGM Top 25 Player Poll-#21 2018-19

Post#1 » by Filthadelphia » Sun Sep 9, 2018 2:54 am

We have debates all the time in various threads over who is better so I thought what better time than summer to see where the General Board lies in its view of the top 25 best players.

I'll update each new poll with the rankings of the last and the percentages of who won.
There's only 10 options per poll so new options will be added as we get lower and lower.

Lets come to a consensus. Feel free to comment who you voted for and why.

If you think someone else should be in the poll who is not there please comment and i'll adjust accordingly.
alessandrux wrote:
I would appreciate it if you can state clearly the procedure.

We vote daily(?) the best player among those who are remaining (and in the poll)?
And after each day, you remove said best voted player, list him as the next best player on our bestlist and start a new poll with the remaining players?

From your players I would replace Irving with Embiid

These are the procedures, yes. Every winner will be removed and then a new entrant will be included on the next poll.

Winner of Poll #20: Kyle Lowry (TOR)-31%

Seems like this ones likely to come down to Simmons vs. Klay. Let’s look at RPM to start with:

Simmons
Age 21: 2.89

Thompson
Age 23: 2.03
Age 24: 3.64
Age 25: 1.77
Age 26: 2.33
Age 27: 1.81

Looking at those numbers, Simmons rookie year beats 4 out of 5 seasons for Klay. Durant may have made Klay’s impact slip a bit since there are already 2 scorers, but you can’t say those three previous years were anything less than a perfect situation for an elite 3&D guy playing next to two very good creators and the best shooter in the history of the game. Even if you try to adjust for Klay being more proven in the playoffs, I don’t see how that can be as big of a factor as Simmons’ improvement from Year 1 to Year 2. I think Simmons has to be the pick at 21.

Nominate Otto Porter for next vote.

Want to pick Wall but he probably has no chance. Klay or Horford most likely. Cant decide between them. Actually no, Horford is better.

Klay Thompson easily. His impact isn’t easily measured by stats, as he is elite off ball. The spacing he provides is like Ray Allen, and he just isn’t utilized as heavily

Mitchell. Add Blake Griffin.
New York said Mitchell wasn't the guy you trade the sink for, then they traded it for Mikal, lol.

So whats everyone opinion on KP? You are not considering him because you don't know how hes gonna come back? You think its a lock he comes back worse? Or even when healthy he isn't top20?

I think he’d be borderline even if he were completely healthy, and there’s a pretty good chance he won’t even play this year. At the very least you can’t really consider him while Cousins is on the board. He’s still a player with a bright future going forward, but I don’t really see him making a major impact until the 2019/20 season.

I'm voting for who I think will be the best for the 2018-19 season. So Cousins who I think is an easy top 10 talent and probably a top 5 player while he was playing last year I wouldn't vote in this years top ~60. I would say Zinger was a borderline top 20 player last year, has GOAT potential so could easily improve without the injury but a guesstimate on his availability will probably be half the available games this year. Given him not being in the stacked GSW team maybe I'd vote for him a bit higher than Boogie but yeh.

Al Horford's impact is being criminally underappreciated, in my opinion.

In today's NBA, this is Thompson. He's a top 5 shooter all time.
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

When John Wall is still slippin.
The proven top teir PG still slippin.
Recency bias is making yall disrespect him to much.

Like wiz and spurs supposed to be two of the best teams in respective confrences coming into the season yet their 'star' arent on the board yet.
Legit if JW or DeRozan drop outa top 25 this stuff is trippy.

The Wiz are legit contenders (though its a slim chance) in the east and their best player hasnt got on the board yet.

If you want the Wizards best player to get voted in, then help me nominate Otto Porter. Also, GTFO with this recency bias argument. Simmons had a better RPM as a rookie than Wall had any of the last 3 seasons. Not just last year. Any of the last three. And Simmons is obviously gonna be a lot better next year.

I dont go off RPM,
I go off the impact the player has on all aspects of the game.
Rebounding isnt that big a thing for a PG honestly so although its nice ben can do it its limited in affect on a game (unless its offensive boards, which he averaged 1.8)
Playmaking, then are as good as eachother, both also use their gravity when driving extremely well.
Simmons uses length and Wall uses speed to dominate defensively.

It all aspects they nearly equal,
Except Simmons got shut down in a playoff series against Cs whom the year before Wall managed to take to 7 games (the Cs had changed drastically, tho Wall was marked by Bradley whom simmons didnt have to deal with)
And simmons has a non-existent jumper, Walls isnt great, but it adds so much more depth to his offensive game.

Overall coming into this season Wall is the better player,
The season after this one I have next to no doubt Simmons will be the better player but atm its Wall.
