Three quarters into the first game of the season. I'm not watching - I'm at work. Here are my awards leaderboard based on the Yahoo! box scores:
MVP - Jayson Tatum
DPOY - Robert Covington
6MotY - Marcus Morris
RoY - (insert tired Ben Simmons joke) Landry Shamet
MIP - (insert insensitive Markelle Fultz joke) Ben Simmons
At the end of the day, it's not about wins and losses. Teamwork, fair play, and good sportsmanship make champions of us all.

Go arbitrary assortment of athletes! Beat the other arbitrary assortment of athletes or my mood will suffer!

Boston just has way too much talent for there to be a good Kyrie MVP narrative. Only way Kyrie has a chance is if they win 65+ and he has a big season. Never really got the Kyrie for MVP takes in the 1st place, he’s just not on the same level as the other candidates.

Seeing as he's a sub par playmaker, rebounder and defender for his position, yeah, that would be a truly tough sell. Specifically since we know they nearly reached the Finals without him, with the majority of those guys improving. I actually think Horford is more important to their team and that Tatum may prove to be their best player this season.

It's probably more likely he doesn't receive a single Top-5 MVP vote than taking it down.

And Giannis should have no shot at winning MVP unless he can take his team 2nd in the weak East.

Disagree. East is top heavy so not seeing why 2nd seed is necessary. Boston, Toronto, and Philly are 3 very strong teams. I think he has to get them to at least a 4th seed and 52+ wins to be considered though.

Not really. For Giannis to have a shot at MVP he would have to help his team take home court advantage coming into the playoffs and also progress as a player from last year.

For Giannis to win the MVP, he needs the Bucks to finish ahead of Philly, get more than 65% wins (54+ wins), have a monster year personally and not have the other prime NBA candidates do something completely extraordinary (like what Russ did two years ago, for example).

If you want it, you need to get a top record. You can talk about how top heavy the east is as much as you want, but none of those teams make the WCF (sans Boston) if they play on the other conference. Other than exceptional circumstances, the MVP is rightfully in the top 2 of West or East.

It's only recently that people are all over handing MVPs to losers during regular season. Giannis getting great stats and finishing 4th in a weak conference is not impressive. There's 4-5 other players in the league that can get Milwaukee to finish 4th if you replace him, with players like Harden, Curry, and Lebron elevating the team to play better while getting those stats to push it further.

As long as the definition of mvp is so loose it’s often pointless to argue about who should be getting it. Itnwill always be subjectice.

Is it the best player of the best team? How do you then quantify best team? Record? Can it be record wise given discrepancy between east and west ?

Is is given solely on stats ? What stats ? Scoring ? Efficiency ? Defence ? How do you factorise the talent a candidate is surrounded with ?

I think controversy is exactly what the organisation needs and controversy is what is being offered.

Giannis would be my pick but I feel like he won't gave the narrative behind him, unless the Bucks storm to 60 plus wins and grab the top spot in the East, which is unlikely, even if I think they'll be much improved compared to last year.

LeBron and Kawhi seem like the most obvious choice.

Is this his name because he's going to quit not winning regular season MVP?

I didn't think the Pelicans game would be competitive, so I never bothered keeping tabs with it. I was partly right? I'm hearing Davis played dominant defense. And watching the highlights, he had quite a few dimes, the most notable "weakness" in his game so far in his career. I'm hoping this is the season he firmly takes that next step as a player and gets "seriously" talked as one of the best players in the league. And by that I mean he gets compared to LeBron and Curry and there are legit arguments in favor of Davis.

Booker is better offensively than Kobe and Harden at the same age.

I have Giannis and Davis as the two prime candidates – the one who gets his team HCA is going to be a favorite. Both have a chance, but I'd probably bet on the Bucks; I expect a really good season of them.

Then, I guess LeBron if the Lakers perform well. Still the best player in the league, but I'm not sure he's really going for it.

Curry I feel will have an amazing year but with limited minutes, the team on cruise control and no insane usage I very much doubt the narrative is going to be there for him.

Harden obviously warrants a mention but MVP won't be a priority for him and the Rockets are likely to be worse – tough to repeat under such circumstances and in this talented league. Durant will have a good year as well but I can't see him as the MVP, same for Westbrook.

Kawhi has a great chance to have a solid narrative but I'm not sure he's good enough to start the season to garner the narrative; I'm also not sure that he'll be a top 3, or even top 5 RS player if he still has to play himself into form and adapt to the team.

Dark-horse candidates are Oladipo, Embiid and Irving but I certainly wouldn't bet any money on them; it's a very long shot.

For now my top 5 are:

Giannis
Davis
Curry
LeBron
Kawhi/Harden

The top 2 teams in the East are probably better than they’ve been in 20 years. It might take the best season in NBA history from Giannis to get the Bucks a top seed. That’s not the bar for MVP. If Bucks go something like 54-28 and get the 3 seed he’s got a fantastic chance.

Shoutout to TJ Warren as 6th man. Looks like he will be a 3 point shooter this season.
