What will the focus be on this season? First, clutching and grabbing off the ball, or as the referees call it, freedom of movement.
This is a good move — how every team has dealt with players moving off picks, especially off-ball, is exactly what you see in the video: clutching, grabbing, holding, and anything that slows a player down. Last season, it only got called when it was blatant. Now, it should be called more often, which should open up offenses and passing lanes, and expose teams that don’t move their feet on defense.

But strong guys like LeBron, Drummond, Davis will continue to be mauled in the paint with no love.

Never understood why that was not enforced heavily before.

Among the Los Angeles Lakers’ biggest issues in the preseason so far has been their penchant for fouling. Luke Walton’s team has committed 61 fouls in two games so far, leading to 68 free throw attempts for the Denver Nuggets, a major disparity that undoubtedly hurt the team in their two losses.
The Lakers aren’t the only team struggling with this as Tuesday’s game between the Rockets and Grizzlies saw 71 fouls called. One reason many are pointing to is the emphasis the league has put on the freedom of movement rule meaning defenders aren’t allowed to put their hands on players when they are cutting or moving around screens.
The rule hasn’t changed, they’re just calling it more,” Walton explained. “It’s like anything, it’s habits. We talk to players if someone is coming off a pick, get in front of them, chest them and take them off their line. So these are all habits that are going to have to be broken and retaught.”

Why stop there? Might as well just put in a new rule that forbids defenders from crossing the halfcourt line.

I wish they let defenders hand check and be physical again

^ All these whiners will be totally losing it if any opponent arm wraps one of their players though.
I do hope the refs are just being especially tough about it in the preseason so everyone gets the message.

This is going to be incredibly annoying when watching a game live and not seeing this off the ball when it happens over and over and over.

I don't want this league to go the way of the NFL. The game has lost so much because of the rule changes to the defense. Ugh

Yeah I'll believe it when I see it. The 2016 Finals was a great example of the game being called by entirely different rules.

Every year the league talks about emphasizing some new calls and the refs call a bunch of fouls for a week or two and then basically forget about it.
Much ado about nothing.

This is why it drives me nuts when the fans of now talk about how much better then stars of today are as opposed to the stars of yesterday. The stars of today look better because of the rules that artificially inflate offense. How good would Curry or Klay look against the bad boy Pistons or Rileys Knicks?

The thing that bothers me with things like this is that there's no real consistency to them. Steven Adams grabs players, he gets grabbed by players. Rarely is anything called (which is at least fair if they let both parties fight for position). But when James Harden hooks the opposing defender, he gets fts. Why is it allowed to push and shove with bigmen, but guards can't be touched? If they want to turn basketball into a no-contact-sport (like my gym teacher called it back in 9th grade or so), fine. But then go and enforce said rule in every situation and not just when it suits you.
