He gets a bad rap because he cannot defend but he is a master on the PnR.

Barea is a little hit-or-miss.

He went undrafted but the Mavs saw some value in him. I still remember him bouncing between the Mavs and the D-league.
Carlisle would throw him into a game to see if the Barea/Dirk two man game was working and if it was effective he'd let Barea play.
Dirk was a big part of why Barea was effective with the Mavs. I still remember Barea tearing up the Lakers in the 2011 playoffs. I think that Lakers team had a problem with small, speedy guards though.

After the Mavs won the championship that raised the stock of a lot of those players like Tyson and Barea. Barea got his payday with the Wolves and he has since returned to the team he was brought up on. I assume he will retire a Mav now.

Chuck put you up to this?

One of my favorit players and a good example that you don´t need to be a crazy athlet or super shooter to be an good offensive PG.
Barea mastered one skill...how to run the pick and roll. His ability to get the ball to the roll man is nearly unmatched in the current NBA.
He should be barely playable because his defense is horrible and his jump shot is streaky but in the modern NBA being able to run the pick and roll is among the most important skills for guards.
No matter the big...he has the synergy. The Barea/Dirk pick and pop was one of the most efficient plays for a long time. Wright, Chandler and Powell can thank him for numerous lob passes and Deandre seems to be a good partner as well.

Definitly up there. He is also one of the reasons we know you can win it all with a smaller point guard.

Easily one of the most maddening players I have ever had the misfortune of watching in a Minnesota Timberwolves uniform. Minnesota would go into fourth quarters winning by double digits, Rick Adelman would bench Ricky for J.J. Barea in the fourth because of Ricky's inability to shoot, and then we would piss away the game because of his horrible hero ball and nonexistent defense. I am glad Dallas utilizes him well, but watching him in a Minnesota uniform was agony.

Been our most efficient player off the bench since JET. He’s great... if only he were 4 or 5 inches taller he would have made a lot more money

I respect him. Over the years he's killed the Nuggets on several occasions.

Definitely respect his career. That guy worked his butt of...I could imagine. Not only is he small and unathletic, he has alligator arms. The funny thing is even after he proved himself as an nba player, there were still fans that ripped on him

There is nothing "unathletic" about JJ Barea.

It is impossible to stick in the NBA at his size if you are not a great athlete.

I think the concept of Variance needs to be understood better or it’s going to be a long year here on the general board.

This.

People can't seem to measure athleticism without looking at height, wingspan and jumping ability.

Many people still undervalue players like Barea because they can't seem to look past the jawdropping variants of athleticism. Lowry is another player whose athleticism goes unnoticed.

Fact is, everybody in the NBA is a freak athlete - even the scrubs - or they wouldn't be there.

That’s silly. Of course everyone is a good athlete in the NBA, but by NBA standards JJ Barea is well below average in that department.
