Watching a team shoot 70 3 pointers in a game is absurd

Post#1 » by EricAnderson » Thu Jan 17, 2019 2:59 pm

I realize why the 3 pointer has become huge and understand the math but as far as from an entertainment and aesthetic standpoint it’s horrible to watch imo. Seeing the Rockets hoist 70 3 pointers last night was my breaking point lol

I just don’t like seeing the league become a 3 point shooting contest now and where everyone pretty much plays the same way.

The Big man is phased out and there is no more post game anymore which is sad.

The leagues becoming way too homogenized. I don’t see a solution because I don’t think it’s gonna change it’s only gonna get worse

Not as absurd as watching a team shot 70 long 2s would be.

ThAtS rEaL bAsKeTbAlL. Watching 7 footers bumping and grinding each other as they pound the rock 70 times a game before passing out for a bricked midrange shot or getting fouled as they put it up at the rim.

It's basketball, not entertainmentball.

I thought the word might be honorable. As in ‘it’s honorable to watch imo’.

I used to think this way, but watching games of the past again players universally were better at creating their own shot in the midrange. Nothing like Kobe's toolkit, but they had some moves. Unlike today's era where it's harder to recover to 3 point shooters, so most 3 pointers are open or semi open, so it's the same spot up shots spammed over and over again. It's effective, but not pleasing to the eye.

I'll tell you what was boring though, players backing their man down for 6 seconds straight.

Just an FYI nets were playing a lot of zone which kinda baited the rockets. Houston is gonna have to outgun teams now, they have zero defense.

Today's game rewards shooting and athleticism. I think most people prefer threes and dunks over hook-shots and free throws.

I don’t think that’s actually true. Tons of players can still create their shot in the midrange, but basic mathematics told coaches and players this was a bad offensive decision so most of them have stopped shooting them at such a high rate. Math is our friend.

I guess it depends on how far you go back and what teams. If it's on 10-15 years ago teams still guarded the 3pt line which naturally opened up the mid range a bit allowing for easier shot creation, especially in 05-06 and beyond.

If you go back to the 90s though I don't know if I really agree. There was a lot of guys who wouldn't take jumpers off the dribble but were high rate ball handlers despite being good shooters. That was also the age when the spot up mid range shot started to come back more, once the balance started tipping back to defense after the offense heavy 80s.

I'd certianly say now though that mid range shot creation in most situations is easier than it ever has been, mostly because of the emphasis on the 3pt line and the growing usage of the deep 3 which stretches defense even more.

That being said if you're looking for pleasing to the eye, Houston is probably one of the last teams you want to look at, lmao.

would you rather the league go back to playing a slow pace and dumping the ball to plodding 7 footers and do "post moves"

i don't

let that era stay dead

good riddance to boring post play-centered nba

It's an Andrea Bargnani joke.

Could be true. Never know unless players just stopped taking 3's.

Just replace Silver already.

There must be an empty rafter somewhere that he can hang upside down from ....and return to his “normal” life.

It's up to the defending team to defend the 3-pt line better. If that leads to more lay-ups then so be it. But this is the game of basketball. You figure out the best way to win games with the players you've got and go for it. If you don't like what that produces, you've just got to watch something else.

It is what it is. Teams have the right to play how they want to. If it works, then good for them. If it doesn't, then they'll change.

What's more absurd to me are referees supporting the terrible acting of James Harden to draw fouls. That, to me, makes a mockery of the game.

Yes it is so much worse than mediocre wings in isos with no other teammates in the play going one on one for 15 seconds and getting off an 18 footer. Or chuck backing down his man not even trying to score for 15 seconds so he can pass out to a cutter or 3 point shooter if the double ever comes.

Everyone wants to see Celtics/Lakers 80's ball again, but those were comically stacked teams playing in an era of absolutely zero transition defense and antiquated half court defense. We're not going back to a world where defenses are that slow and lumbering
