Why doesn't San Diego have an NBA team?

It's the 8th largest city in America, the 2nd largest in California (sorry, San Francisco), it's 75 degrees and sunny every day of the year and it's only a couple of hours away from OC/LA.

All the talk of potential NBA expansion has been about Seattle and Las Vegas. But why not San Diego? What's "wrong" with it?

Same thing that's wrong with New Jersey, it's close enough to the monster market that the team was better off just moving.

What arena are they going to play in? San Diego doesn't have a viable arena like Seattle, Las Vegas, or other cities do. Pechanga Arena only seats 14,500 and was built in 1966.

Las Vegas is probably a better destination for a team than San Diego. I like San Diego, and would have preferred the Clippers stayed there.

They could share the SDSU arena. Clippers go back to your hole. Back!! Back!!

Viejas Arena only seats 12,414 for basketball. I would love to see the Clippers move to Las Vegas or San Diego though personally.

12,000 is enough for their fans right?

No, the Clippers moved to Los Angeles the year before the Lakers won title #9 out of 16. They've been in L.A. ever since. What are you talking about?

I know but they moved back after selling their ownership.

Are you joking and I don't get it? The SDC have been around almost all my life, maybe you're suffering from a Mandela effect.

I'd love to see the Clippers move to Seattle and the Kings move to San Diego.

I think one day SD will have a team. Whether through expansion or a team moving, it'll happen.
Move the Grizzlies to Seattle and Pelicans to San Diego and call it a day I say. Both teams have struggled with attendance the past few years. Minnesota and Phoenix would also benefit from moving as they have even worse attendance.

It's rained almost every day for the past 2+ months. I didn't move here to get rained on. Also, San Diego is an awful sports city.

Eh, I'm not so sure I would call them an awful sports town. Chargers never had an attendance problem, Padres are about mid-pack in attendance, San Diego Gulls are the highest attendance in the AHL. San Diego Fleet AAF team is drawing fairly well. They did sellout the 1 Lakers preseason game in October.

They just don't have an arena for any team to move to San Diego, at all.

I mostly just don't want the Clippers here. Also, I drive for work. The Chargers moving out of San Diego was the best thing ever. There's already way too much traffic here.

Yeah, Vegas would be cool, too. I'm partial to SD because I used to spend a lot of time there and I adore the city, but also because it has NBA history and an established sports culture. But Vegas could be a great look for the league, too.

Does California really need 5 teams?
