Is it OK to laugh at Embiid for crying?

Post#1 » by CoP » Tue May 14, 2019 2:06 pm

Some potential arguments to consider on either side.

There's nothing wrong with Embiid crying. It just means he's passionate about the game, and laughing at that is wrong and feeds into toxic masculinity. There's nothing wrong with a grown man showing emotion and we shouldn't make fun of a man for crying.

Considering all the trash talk Embiid engages in, laughing at him for crying is his comeuppance, and if he can't deal with that, too bad.

While Embiid certainly engaged in trash talking, he never made fun of anyone for crying, and making fun of Embiid for crying is an action that is substantially worse than doing some light-hearted Twitter trolling.

It's OK to laugh at Embiid crying because of who he is and how he conducts himself, both showboating during games and trolling in postgame press conferences and on Twitter. No one laughed at Derrick Rose for crying after he had his 50-point game, for example. But Embiid had it coming with all that he gives.

Yes, and I applaud anyone that does it

More to the point, it's not "toxic masculinity" to mock a player for failing in the playoffs. My gf laughed her ass off too, I guess she's a toxic man as well? Stop with those fake terms designed to sow division amongst men and women.

Embiid is a big bully that talks and taunts against lesser players. And makes excuses when he fails to perform.

Why shouldn't fans mock his failures? I'm certain no one would be laughing at him if he won the series and cried, ala Jordan crying and holding Pippen.

Did people laugh at Kevin Durant after the 2012 loss?

People act like Embiid talks trash with HS kids; He typically gets into it with other top players.

Can’t stop everyone from getting butthurt I suppose.

That was before people disliked Durant. If it was Durant now, people would laugh.

He talks a lot of trash, but also isn't afraid to show he's vulnerable. Respect.

He had the best +/- in the playoffs and his team lost through no fault of his own. I don't see why we should laugh at him crying - he did everything he was supposed to.

We should laugh at Elton Brand for not giving Brett Brown a decent big-man to work with.

Even if he doesn't always behave well, I don't want to see a fellow human in a distressed state.

+/- don't mean a thing if you're shooting WAY below your average and aren't necessarily contributing outside of defense

If he averaged his regular season average, they would have won the series.

If Embiid didn't run his mouth so much people probably wouldn't care enough to laugh at him. When you dish out trash talk you should be prepared to take it back.

No, you want to see that from an athlete, he cares, sign of giving a damn and dedication.

Would I laugh at an opponent crying? No.

Do I think it's pretty dumb to laugh at it? Yes

Is it wrong? No it isn't but it means you're capable of being a bit snide at best - that's all.

Initial thought was no, but then i remembered that these guys make more money in one season than most of us would in our lifetime. They don't face the routine struggles that middle class people do, though i get he's still human and is passionate about winning. Tough call, i didn't laugh at him but i wouldn't care if someone did.

I don't think you watched the series with a comment this ignorant. Embiid was a +90 for the series, the next best 76er player was a +15. That should give you a slight indication of why this loss isn't on Embiid.

Tobias Harris and Monroe were trash on both ends and finished as a -33 and -26 this series, that's why they lost. Every time Joel stepped off the court Raptors went on runs and erased deficits.

I kind of have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand he has been one of the biggest NBA trolls in the league so it kind of seems deserved. Plus it will give opponents something to poke him about when he runs his mouth. One the other hand I respect his talent and want to see him become great. I was glad to see how much he cares because from the outside looking in I see a guy who eats hamburgers in warm ups and he and Simmons seemed too quick to buy in to their own hype. I would like to see Embiid reach his potential and I think this helps him. In a weird way I kind of gained more respect for him.
