Is Iggy a Hall of Famer

Post#1 » by Lou Fan » Fri May 17, 2019 3:44 pm

Assuming the dubs win and he gets chip number 4. Will he make the hall of fame?

This is not a does he deserve it thread. I don't care if you think the basketball HOF is too liberal with their definition of a hall of famer. This is strictly a thread about whether or not he will be voted in.

I’d tend to say yes, but he shouldn’t be.

If Chauncey Billups isn’t a HOFer then no way Iggy should be.

Finals MVP
All-star
All-defense (1st and 2nd)
Probably finishes with 4-5 rings where he was the 2nd/3rd best defender

He has a case, especially if he sticks around for long. We have to look past the stats for him.

He's had sort of a poor man's Dennis Johnson kind of career. Not great offensive numbers but versatile skillset, great defender, super glue guy, winner. But DJ has better numbers overall, played in multiple Finals with two different teams and won with two different teams, was a 5x all-star (vs 1 for Iggy), was 9x all-defense (vs 2 for Iggy), was 2x all-NBA (1x 1st team, vs 0 total for Iggy). Rings and Finals MVPs currently even.

Basketball Reference's HOF probability was 50.9% for DJ (he's in, BTW), but 6.1% for Iggy.

So I'd say possible but unlikely.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yesterday I was lying; today I'm telling the truth.

Iguodala has been very poor and close to a dead weight in the regular season. In this post season run, he is bringing exactly what's needed in this GS system, but I think many guys would have thrived in that role because 1) he is not being asked to do a huge amount of lifting 2) he is constantly involved on 4-on-3, 3-on-2, 2-on-1 situations because of the gravity of other all star teammates. Look at Livingston regular season vs post season performance, and Looney, they all follow a similar pattern for a reason, and the reason is not just about themselves "bringing it". The rise of those guys coincided with the inconsistency of Curry and Klay, and that's pretty telling. It's a byproduct of opponent's game plan.

I will consider Ben Wallace and Chauncy Billups before I look at Iguodala. Though with current HOF standard, "4 rings 1 FMVP" might be enough to get you in.

If Calvin Murphy can make it into the hall of fame so can Iggy

This is nuts. There are some undeserving guys in the HOF but might as well let anyone in if you want to lower the bar this far for IGGY.

Calvin Murphy could hit more free throws blindfolded than Iggy hits with 2 eyes.

Murphy was a 18 per player. Iggy is a 12ppg player for his career.
My eyes glaze over when reading alternative stat (not advanced stat) narratives that go many paragraphs long. If you can not make your point in 2 paragraphs it may not be a great point. :D

If Ben Wallace isn't getting in than Iggy shouldn't get in.

Ben Wallace needs to get in. If he doesn't it's a travesty.

I'm fine with Billups over Iggy too. But I'm not bothered by Iggy getting in either if I'm honest. We've established the basketball HoF isn't trying to be as exclusive as baseball. We should either be putting in very few players or guys like these 3 I'm okay with.

If bums like Pierce are going to eventually end up there, I don't see any reason why Iggy shouldn't make it. The standards are quite low for Basketball HoF compared to other major sports.

Ricky Pierce wasn't a bum. He was a very good 6th man. Now he's not going to make the HoF, but no need for the name calling.
