Coach K: Zion never should’ve played Summer League

Post#1 » by SirCharles3434 » Fri Jul 12, 2019 2:59 pm

Sounds like excuses to me but it did look like he wasn’t in game shape to play, even if it was only for 10 minutes.

You could tell that he did picked up some pounds since March.

If he can't make it longer than a half in a summer league game, it's not looking good that he'll make it in the NBA, resting him the rest of summer league or not.

Summer League is basically like a pickup game for Zion. That's how most NBA players stay in shape in the offseason. The vast majority of SL players are just trying to make it to the NBA. I have no issue with him playing if it helps him get in shape. He does look like he put on a few pounds though.

He’ll be the first NBA Star to be on load management from his rookie year on. Won’t be the last.

as far as protecting your asset maybe but he's a super young and needs to get accustomed to the next level.. load mgmt gonna be the next fad in the nba.. sitting a rookie is absurd unless injured.

Ya, totally. Because by looking at Zion you can definitely tell if he put on a few pounds.

Out of shape was more of this issue.

Summer League should be pushed back to like mid-August. Let the young men all get signed and practice for a couple weeks. These guys stop playing in March. So many players selected in the first round don't even step foot on the court in Vegas now. They're either out of shape, dinged up, or completely unfamiliar with the system teams want to run.
It is highly unlikely that the Cavs will agree with your Kevin Love evaluation for the purpose of a trade.

Not a good endorsement. A number 1 pick should be in shape to play summer league games, unless he is recovering from an injury.

He looked like he put on more weight. Which isnt encouraging. Regardless he still had an impact. IMO his biggest red flag is his weight and lack of height for his position.

He bumped knees with someone and had someone roll onto his legs. Those were the two first quarter plays that looked like the cause of his tweaked knee. How are either of those related to being in game shape? He could have been in the best shape and someone still could have bumped his knee.

Whether he should have played in Summer League or not, I'm sure there was a wink-nudge "encouragement" for him to make a token appearance in at least one SL game.

Kind of like the league getting involved in the Pels' lineup and minutes decisions because they wanted AD on the floor for various reasons.

My post isn't Zion specific. I think a lot of first round picks who are held out aren't in basketball shape yet and are unfamiliar with the systems that are in place. Just give them July and early August to fix that.

Dude's probably around 300 pounds at 6'7 and he is 6'7. That's an injury waiting to happen, he needs to tone it down to 250-260... The weight could be detrimental to his NBA career(and that fugly, slow shot)...
Good assessment:

Oh I agree to an extent. I guess I just feel that most players should be working on their game and or working out during off time. In the case of Zion it looked like he gained weight instead of cut some. If he was 280 of 285 before he must be 300 now.
