This is actually a really tough one for me. I feel like Oladipo, Vucevic, and Horford all have pretty good cases. Horford is the safe option, has finished 18th and 19th in RPM the last 2 years, and has a pedigree of playoff success. He's also 33 years old though and his advanced stats weren't as good playing outside of the Stevens system. Vucevic is the natural progression pick. Went from 106th in RPM 3 years ago to 49th 2 years ago to 8th last year. However, he really stunk up the joint last year in his playoff debut. Went from a 25.5 PER on .573 TS% in the regular season to a 10.1 PER on .436 TS% in the postseason. Is some of that natural growing pains for a guy going to the playoffs the first time right after becoming the top guy on his team? Sure? Is it a small sample? Undoubtedly. But I can't say I really trust him to give a superstar performance in next year's playoffs either. Then Oladipo's a wild card. Looked like a legitimate ascendant superstar in 2018 before slipping last year in 36 games and suffering a major injury. I was higher on him than anyone at the start of last year and he has the highest ceiling, but there's also a major possibility that he's not effective at all next coming off this injury. He's supposed to come back in December or January at which point it will have been close to a full year since the initial injury. I don't really feel good about voting for any of these choices. Tough decision all around.

Will vote Klay from here on out. Half of his season is better than the remainders’ full (or Dipo’s partial).

No one to nominate. This should have ended at 25.

If you don’t like it, don’t vote, LOL. If you’re opening the thread and voting, it must have some value for you.

As for Klay, here’s his RPM by season:

2015: 3.64 (30th)
2016: 1.67 (65th)
2017: 2.33 (44th)
2018: 1.81 (60th)
2019: -0.33 (175th)

Now granted, Klay played much better in the playoffs than his overall RPM would suggest, but that’s still a disconcerting decline for a player coming off a very serious injury that’s going to cause him to miss over half the season. I don’t see much case for him ahead of guys like Oladipo, Horford, or Vucevic.

So defensive.

All I’m saying is once you get past #20 or so, there’s very little difference in level, and none
of the players are big stars.

And there’s not a single GM in the league who would pay Horford or Vucevic more than Klay Thompson. You’re just being provocative/silly. You’re also seriously overvaluing the one good season Dipo ever had (on a relatively bad team, in a historically bad conference).

The poll is for the upcoming season where Klay has a serious injury that’s going to cause him to miss over half of it. What a GM would pay him doesn’t matter. But I don’t think Klay would necessarily get anywhere near the money he made on a lot of teams. On a win-now team that has multiple elite scorer/creators, sure why not go all-in? But I don’t think teams like the Pacers or Magic would prefer him by any means.

Obviously. He would have been at least top-20 otherwise (as would Dipo).

Nah, he wouldn’t have been top 20. He was only #21 last summer and that was before his awful regular season last year. I can’t see him going above 27 even if healthy.

Vote: Oladipo

Significantly better than everybody on this list after #18 and if not for injury could be as high as #11.

RPM by year:

Horford
Age 30: 1.82 (60th)
Age 31: 3.89 (19th)
Age 32: 4.43 (18th)

Vucevic
Age 26: 0.77 (106th)
Age 27: 2.23 (49th)
Age 28: 5.49 (8th)

Oladipo
Age 24: 1.66 (66th)
Age 25: 5.91 (6th)
Age 26: 2.23 (47th)

McCollum
Age 25: 1.14 (87th)
Age 26: -0.33 (178th)
Age 27: 1.14 (94th)

Can’t say I see much of a case for McCollum. FWIW, the reason he ranks so low is that his defense is consistently poor year after year. He ranks 53/63, 72/83, and 70/107 defensively at his position. He ranked 23, 43, and 33 overall offensively.

Can anyone really argue with this? His numbers have been similar to the other 3 guys, arguably better, arguably worse, but at least in line. Meanwhile, all 3 are excellent top tier defenders while McCollum is maybe a bottom 15% defender at one of the weaker defensive positions. How can he possibly make up that gulf defensively?

Remember, we are projecting for next season. Victor isn’t coming back until sometime in 2020. Otherwise he’d be on the list already. Horford is 33 and on a new team where he will be the second best big, so a performance decline is expected. Vuc is a fair point, I think people remember CJ’s playoff performance where he was the main reason Portland beat The higher seeded Nuggets and are rewarding him for that.
