Should Luka fans worry about his shot selection?

Yes, it's pretty bad at times.

Doncic's efficiency and shot selection, is it a concern?

Post#1 » by 3toheadmelo » Tue Oct 15, 2019 2:52 pm

I am concerned about his efficiency and shot selection. Chucks up too many bad shots. He looks even worse this preseason, 41.5% FG. That’s awful.

He is scoring at an elite, 60%TS efficiency. PER36, for the preseason, he is averaging 31/12/7 with almost 2.5 steals, shooting above 40% from three. The only thing we are concerned about, man, is that the real season is still a week away. :D

I think he should take a good step back before he takes a 3.

Mavs are concerned they didn’t take Ayton or Bagley.

Where the hell is this coming from? Doncic's TS was 54% last year (ranked 138th). For illustrative purposes, 60% was what Kawhi Leonard did TS% wise, ranked 30th overall.

The whole thread is about the preseason, dude. I even put the word preseason there, but apparently, it wasn't enough. :D

His three point shooting has looked really good in the preseason.

Doncic looks fine. It's KP that should be the concern, though again, it's only preseason.

KP hasn't played for 19 months. He looks pretty solid all things considered.

He gets bailed out with calls a lot of time. Today's game is all about manipulating the rules to get to the free throw line. Doncic has mastered that aspect of the game already.

He has a good stroke. Shot selection is sometime a problem. Happy that his FTs seems to be back for the past 2 games. He has to shoot at least 80% for the FTs. He's at 10.7 FTs per game in 26MPG so far in the preseason. His ability to get to the FT line should be Harden like (for better or worst).

It's only his 2nd year, if he can get to .560-.570 TS% with the type of shots he takes, it will be great.

Watching both him and Harden excessively, he gets nowhere near the amount of "tricked" calls. He is a smart offensive player of course, but doesn't stretch/challenge the rules like Harden does.

Yeah, KP seems a little passive/tentative at times out there--not as aggressive on defense or offense as he was before the injury--but again, as you state, it's been 19 months since he's played competitive ball. From what I've seen, it takes time even for fully recovered players to completely believe in/trust their own bodies again. I think KP's been inconsistent, and occasionally great. I expect we'll see more of the latter as the season progresses.

I don’t understand how Luka can hit step back 3’s but only shoots 71% from the FT line.

He will be fine. The real concern should be coming from the other 29 teams at how good this kid is before he can have a beer.

I wouldn't be too worried about his shot selection at this point in his career. Doncic is the type of player who needs to continue to test the limits of what he's capable of on the floor. Let him make mistakes, because when he gets it right he looks brilliant. The main goal this season for Dallas should be to discover what Doncic and KP can do together so that Dallas can learn what they need to build around their star duo.

He didn't shoot 71% in Europe. It's clearly mental. He went through a bad stretch and had trouble getting out of it. It SHOULD get better.

I’m not concerned about him or Porzingis. Be experimental in preseason all you want
