Pacers starting Lamb-Warren-Sabonis-Turner will not a top 2 defense make. They lost Thadd Young, he was their most versatile defender. Oladipo we don't know when he's coming back. Brogdon is a great defender, but he's better on 2s and 3s than he is on point guards. Jeremy Lamb is not a good defender at any position.

POR (Offense 15->3)
DEN (Defense 25->10)
IND (Defense 13->3)
SAS (Offense 17->7)
PHI (Defense 4->15)
MIL (Defense 19->1)
HOU (Defense 6->17)
What's going to stay and or/improve, what's going to revert back?
I can tell you right now, what the difference was with Philadelphia. Removing Covington and replacing him with Butler, killed the defense.
1. Covington covered guards, and disrupted opposing offenses. That's not Butler's strength. He covers forwards and is better on the interior.
2. Butler's overall defense fell off a cliff last year. He can no longer guard the best players consistently. But he can occasionally make a big play, with anticipation.
Richardson's ability to defend guards will automatically make the 76ers defense better, just because they had no one capable last year.
I agree that Covington was a huge loss. While I think Butler's defense may not be as great as it once was, I think he's till pretty good and closer to value to Richardson than Covington.
Covington is perhaps the most underrated defender in the league. Everybody knows he's good, but he might be top 5 defender good. Especially when you look at it from a value over replacement perspective.
Sixers added Richardson, Horford, and Thybulle to Embiid and Simmons which is a better fit than having Butler guard SFs like Kawhi and LeBron.
Butler was too small to cover the bigger SFs. Kawhi and Ibaka bullied Butler to win that series. With Horford as a secondary rim protector and rebounder, their defense should be stronger. Also, Richardson guarding Pgs should be a huge improvement too.
