Is Rick Carlisle a GOAT level coach?

Post#1 » by HBK_Kliq_33 » Sat Nov 30, 2019 3:49 pm

People can say what they want about Mark Cuban but he clearly made the right decision for this franchise. Cuban has said he wants Rick as his Jerry Sloan and you can understand why. Is Carlisle a goat level coach?

- 2002 won coach of the year

- 2004 and 2006 kept pacers respectable with garbage rosters

- 2011 won a title with a 1 man team and beat prime LeBron/Wade

- 2014 took the eventual champion spurs to 7 games with Monta Ellis as the best player

- 2015 led mavs to 50 wins despite the Rondo trade ruining team chemistry. Cussed out Rondo but ultimately was right about him as Rondo has been cancer ever since

- 2016 led mavs to 42 wins with a garbage roster

- 2020 developed 20 year old Luka into a superstar leading a 117 rated offense and top 4 SRS

He's definitely underrated. But I wouldn't say a GOAT coach. Phil, Red and Pop have just done too much for him to be in the conversation.

Not GOAT, but easily HOF. The dude has been the clear cut 2nd best coach in the game for awhile now behind Pop.

Well, he will probably still coach for a very long time and if Luka can bring him a couple of more championships, he will certainly be up there.

He's definitely one of the better coaches of his era but he still needs to win a couple of more championships to get into the GOAT discussion. I'm not sure he's capable of doing that though

Gotta give Carlisle some credit for taking a team that has almost no talent outside of Luka to the 4th spot in the West.
It's time for 5 refs.

I'm mostly here. I do think there are a couple other coaches in the running with Rick but I think its pretty safe to say he is the best offensive coach in the league and has been for a long time.

Actually you are wrong here.

I think Carlisle is the best in getting the best results out of any (wacky) roster you give him...

Carlisle is excellent at doing a lot with a little. Main reason I like that we are keeping him around. Pop is the beat at making something out of nothing. Rick is right up there.

What I haven’t seen recently is Rick Carlisle with a team full of talent. I’m hoping he gets some great talent to coach around Luka.

GOAT, no, but certainly one of the all-time greats. Maybe top-10.

Luka & Oscar = 5 x 27/8/8
The Brodie = All-out energy

What has Spoelstra done without Shaq/Wade, or Lebron/Wade/Bosh? He's had some prime Wade rosters near the bottom of the league.

A GOAT coach would have gotten more out of a HOF like Dirk in the 2010s who had no significant injury.

He's been a really good coach over the years but not goat level. The Goats to me are Phil, Larry Brown, Pop, Sloan, Red, Daly, Nelson and Riley.

I think he's knocking on the door. He's had to coach some pretty mediocre rosters throughout his career. I'm guessing if the Malice in the Palace didn't happen, he would've taken that Pacers team (his strongest one on paper, I believe) to a title.
