This is insanity. How can anyone support the Houston Rockets organization after this?

I wonder if players see this kinda stuff and if it sways them away from signing with the Rockets...or maybe they just go for the money i dont know.

This guy might be worse than Sarver and Dolan combined!

Dont panic. Read the article.

This happened to a few of my friends. A lot of businesses are laying off their employees so they can collect unemployment from the government while the business isn't giving them hours, with the intention of hiring the employee back when they are able to reopen. Thats what it sounds like his business is doing as well, if you read the first article. This is a benefit to employees, they still get some sort of paycheck (from the government via unemployment), they don't have to use their Paid Time Off that they've worked for (and they get it back upon re-hire), and they can have their job back when they open again.

While this Fertitta has a history of sleezy moves, this doesn't seem like another one to put on the long list...at least thats what I got from the articles. As long as he does re-hire everyone that wants their job back, then I don't think this is a very big deal.

unfortunately this is going to be pretty commonplace over the next few months.

This is pretty much industry standard, in the food service industry anyways. Employees are easily replaced when needed.

This is not an indictment of the Rockets/Feritta but the lack of American worker protection laws.

What did people expect was going to happen? All throughout history people taking care of themselves first and now people will be egalitarian? In a free-market economy, government needs to step up in times of crisis because there isn’t any other way.

If laid off workers can collect extended unemployment, it’s a start. Don’t see any other way, really.

All the free market economics has gone out the window as all these corporations are clamoring for bailouts.

It's amazing how people rail against socialism except for when they need it for themselves

Yeah I think Tilman Fertitta has done plenty of scummy things, this seems like he's trying to ride the wave of government support both for his own good and maybe as an unexpected byproduct, to the benefit of his employees.

So he takes all there banked overtime and it is no longer payable or able to be taken as time off, as he doesn't have to give it back or re-hire people with large amounts and he limits that liability to zero, that's kind of scummy... and their benefits (e.g. medical)? I mean, those are kind of important right now. I don't know laws there enough that when you are laid off if they disappear immediately, but if so, that's a real scummy move.

He's letting the government pay for as much as possible. Employees will be back to work after its over. Sometimes, there is a delay in getting benefits paid out. I think this is an overreaction.

Unless you belong to the NBA player's union that demands for full paid without finishing the season, can publicly make fun of a pandemic without any consequences or can skip the testing wait queue, very few employees in America can enjoy the same income security and benefits.

I work in local government and see it all the time. When it's their neighbor's lawn, they expect the full extent of government malice. When it's their lawn, you can't IMAGINE the circumstances and hardship they're going through.

There are, of course, the people that call in and realize what it has started and withdraw the complaint as well.

So do people expect businesses like food service and hotels to just continue to pay hourly workers at their average hours per week for not working? While at the same time not bringing in any money at all cause no one is staying at the hotels and coming to eat at the restaurants? Businesses just can’t do that - they’ll destroy themselves financially. A lot of these corporations are publicly traded and have shareholders to answer to, so it’s not one person who loses out too.

Setting them up to get unemployment is the best thing they can do. What would be really ideal is if there is some way to continue their health benefits at the same time (if they had them before). I think in most states a significant reduction in hours qualifies for unemployment benefits, so hopefully they get the unemployment check and pay whatever their employee premium was for health care to keep their coverage going w/ that. And then they all can be brought back in their same jobs, etc. when the crisis is over.

Well, part of that comes from them being in a union and isn’t just specific to the NBA. I wonder if after this crisis is over if you will see a bigger appreciation for unions in the USA.

Some employers even got ahead of the curve and had their employees file early before the unemployment offices got slammed

When you own a business, your first obligation is to the business. If the business fails, it can't employ anyone.

Fertitta must do what is best for the business. Obviously you've never owned a business.

"Socialism" - a scary slippery slope for protecting workers but fine for 'saving' corporations!

It's such a misunderstood term in the first place. The whole notion of collecting from the masses for a centralized service already happens in the US, and in massive fashion, with the military. It's just that most other countries (and every other G8 country) extend this logic to health and education, to varying degrees.

It's all hypocrisy.

Read the article before jumping the gun on a sensationalist title.

The exact notice he sent to employees is in the first link:

However, at this time the Company is suspending use of PTO until further notice. Therefore, hourly team members may not request or use PTO until further notice. Any accrued hours will be available upon your return for future use. Should you choose to resign from employment during this time, in accordance with applicable laws, we will pay out accrued and unused PTO, and your benefits coverage (if any) will terminate at the end of this month, March 2020. Any Team Members who choose to resign will not be scheduled when operations resume and will need to reapply for any open positions, once available.
