Is he way underrated on defense? yes. Is it a wash, no. Bam is very good.

Yeah Theis is underrated but he's not as good as Bam. It's not a wash.

No. He’s very good. But hes not the most underrated and he’s not a wash vs Bam.

The C's may well have won the series vs the Raps cause he won the matchup vs Gasol very convincingly.

Theis was $$$ vs. the Raps.

He's underrated for sure and Bam is probably a little overrated right now, but it's far from a wash. Bam is the better player.

I was about to say, idk who the kid is but he's Ballin every time that I watch him. I feel like I can trust him to be him and that's all that you need

Theis is a defensively solid physical big who plays bigger than his 6’8” listed height. He rolls to the basket well and is great in pick n roll defense. He can occasionally hit the three but I would give that to him because he’s probably the worst on the floor at it for Boston outside of Rob Williams.

But Bam is a superior player to Theis. I don’t think Bam has a cakewalk, but I don’t think Theis negates Bam.

It’s sure as hell not a wash lol, cmon son. Bam is a top 25 player, maybe top 20.

But Theis is really freaking good, and smart as hell. That was a serious find by Ainge.

I love Theis, the guy just goes out there and does his job - but, it's not a wash. Bam is definitely the better player. However, I do think that Theis does what he needs to do as well as almost any other big out there. In other words, he fits into the C's system as well as Bam fits into Miami's system. The C's don't really need an over-powering big for what they do. They use Theis as well as Miami uses Bam. Again, I'm not talking about stats and numbers (which will most likely favor Bam), but rather doing the little things that help a team win - which is where I think Theis is at his best.

As Euroleague fan, he translated way better than I could have hope. Always wondered how Kyle Hines would do in the league, his intangibles are so good, Hines cant shoot tho, at all, so its a major no no at NBA level nowadays. Also wonder about Chris Singleton, deserved a second shot IMO, great defender.

His biggest weakness is rebounding and battling for position down low, bam killed Giannis and lopez, so that battle doenst bode well.

I don't think he's underrated on defense. Isn't he mainly known FOR his defense?

Underrated? Yes. No way it’s a wash with bam.

Hes that perfect player for a team that wants to build around other positions and then plug a effective Center in at a good price.

He played his small ball C role well vs Raps. Didn't think we utilized our strengths vs his weaknesses consistently enough. I'm afraid Bam might change that.

As I read the thread OP was asking if people agreed that Theis is the most underrated player in the NBA. Which is a good point, though as a Celtics fan I'm biased and would need to see some other suggestions to compare from other posters. He's also extremely good at sealing off the defending big off a screen to create a lane for the ball handler in the pick in roll, though that never shows up on the stat sheet. Also could argue he gets about the worst whistle from the refs in the league.

Any one else have some suggestions for underrated players to compare Theis to?

I don't think the discussion was meant as a Theis vs Bam conversation as Bam is pretty clearly a better player, as most people have already posted.

He's definitely underrated by the guy in the game thread who says Theis is exactly like Meyers Leonard except at least Leonard can shoot.

As soon as you're underrated, you're overrated.

But yeah, this guy was a huge factor in that round 2 win. Great defender, good rebounding, good shotblocking, good passer, smart player.

Disagree. One of his biggest strengths is the offensive boards and his ability to create extra possessions in conjunction with his teeny tiny turnover count.
