Why does no one talk about the other trade the Clippers made?

The Paul George trade was arguably one of the worst trades in NBA history. It was so bad that it actually ended up overshadowing another trade the Clippers made that is just mind-blowingly horrendous.

If you don't know by now... I'm referring to this:

Image

Let's break the deal down a bit... the 2021 draft is considered one of the strongest in a very, VERY long time. Strong crop of players at the top and a lot of depth in the class as well making it very deep. The Clippers traded two picks from the draft. The Pistons second rounder will be an early second round pick which would be equivalent to a late first round pick in this years draft. The Clippers also traded their first round pick from this years draft in the deal. To make matters worse all of these assets were traded for an expiring contract.

The current outlook of the Clippers future assets:

How Lawrence Frank won Executive of the Year is beyond me...

The Paul George trade was arguably one of the worst trades in NBA history.

I get that it's en vogue to make fun of the Clippers, but the Paul George trade is not even close to being one of the worst trades in NBA history.

When you start of a post like that, you risk losing readers at the first sentence.

Yeah that was always a terrible trade. Dunno why so many people thought it was a good thing at the time. Terrible.

OP is analyzing their situation going forward, he is not making fun of the organization. Their future is bleak if they don't win a championship and add some legitimacy to the franchise, because not only will nobody of significance want to sign there, they also won't have players to draft in what are going to be some very big drafts.

Buddy this is a forum... I'm not writing for the Athletic or something.

And the Paul George trade is definitely one of the worst in NBA history. Not making fun of the team, simply stating a fact. I don't know how you can possibly argue against that.

Then how'd they sign Kawhi?

Wow I missed the picks they sent in that trade. That is so bad.

If the Clippers flame out further over the next 1-2 seasons, this short time of PG13 and Kawhi will be laughed at for donkeys years. Like, KG and Pierce to the Nets laughable.

They got lucky that he was obsessed with playing in his hometown and that LeBron was already with the Lakers.

Sounds like they can still draw in FA.

According to Woj, Paul George was brought to the clippers in order to get Leonard - which paid off.

OKC definitely got a great haul for Paul George, and the clippers mortgaged their future, but PG is a good player, in his prime, who was first team all nba and 3rd in MVP voting just a year ago. At the end of the day the clippers are still championship contenders heading into next season - which is a pretty big deal for a team that has never won a championship.

Meanwhile, look up the names the Hawks got for Bill Russell, the 76ers got for Charles Barkley, the Bucks got for Dirk Nowitzki, the Hornets got for Kobe Bryant, the sonics got for Scottie pippen, the Bucks got for Kareem... And tell me with a straight face that the Paul George trade is one of the worst in NBA history.

The best part about the Marcus Morris trade & Andre Igoudala deal is teams went after those players strongly after the rumor mill was the lakers wanted them to bolster their roster. Only problem was the lakers werent going to overpay. Marcus Morris was never a good fit for that team and they overpaid losing moe harkless who was a glue guy. But apparently we aren't executives of the year so we don't see the silver lining in losing those draft picks or adding a luka doncic enforcer to our roster. That foul on Luka will come back to haunt them for years to come, he'll want to beat the clippers every chance he gets the next 15years.

I think I’d prefer harkless in my team as a hustle, glue guy over Morris. No way I’d pay a first for the swap

It's too early to tell if PG13's trade was one of the worst in league history. Things look bleak for them right now, but if they bounce back and win a ring next year it would've been worth it. On the flip side, if they crash and burn again, and Kawhi leaves after next season, then this trade should definitely be considered as an all-time blunder.

The Morris trade was straight up bad.

You cant compare trading for an mvp candidate with trading for a guy before he even plays his first game.
With that said im with you in the sense that you cant judge the trade just yet, you have to see how this unfolds in LA and what OKC does with those picks. Its very rare to completely overhaul your roster and have immediate success. I suppose the lakers did this year but Lebron creates his own circumstances that are unique based on his level of talent.

Their cap situation is quite interesting as well, and I really don't see many avenues of improvement. Even more interesting are the player options that Kawhi and George hold for 2021-2022. The rebuild that chaperones a potential departure will be horrific. Worthy of a film, a la Moneyball, levels of horrific.

This trade isn't that bad at all. Jerome Robinson was already a bust. The chances of the Knicks finishing ahead of the Clippers in 2021 has to be less than 1%, and 2nds are trivial assets. The trade is effectively 1 late round 1st pick to upgrade from Harkless to Morris, which includes the value of keeping him from a competitor. Morris definitely played important minutes for the Clippers, even if he wasn't a great fit.

Kinda...Kawhi told the Clips he wasn't signing there unless they get a bonafide second star - hence why the Clips paid threw the nose for PG. Still, though the trade was a steep cost, it's a stars league and you do what you can to get those few stars out there. IMHO, (and many others I'm sure) if the Clips had a bit better chemistry the team would have overcome the adversity they came up against with the Nuggets - the Clips are definitely the better team. Not to mention PG wasn't fully healthy. Now, if the Clips lose again and then implode and lose KL or PG then yes, one of the worst trades ever.

I'm hoping the Clippers win the Chip, if only to remove Sterling's stain on the team and league.
