This one is very funny haha

A lot of great stories coming from Ron in the All the Smoke podcast, it just came out, really good one.

Edit: Knicks took Frederick Weis 15th OVR, Ron was picked next with the 16th OVR by Chicago

When you read this kind of story, you have to be astonished that he had such a good career... It would be such a red flag right now, he would fall hard in the draft. Now, imagine what he would have accomplished if he wasn't such a head case.

The wildest thing about this post is that he changed his last name to Sandiford-Artest.

I think it goes to show you that sometimes our classical idea of what is a good behavioral trait for sports is not always correct.

One has to wonder. Artest certainly had a plethora of head-scratching moments during his colorful time in the league... he is gifted at hoops, but that about all

The player (Frédéric Weis) the New York Knicks drafted one spot ahead of him ended up playing 0 games in the NBA...

Metta has always kept it 100, he was speaking on mental health awareness before it was popular &
he became a laker fav when trevor ariza bolted and ron made us not even miss him, and he was huge in game 7 knockin off the celtics
Good Times.
this was a great episode

I went to St John's and I met him a few times and he was super normal. When the Knicks passed on him I thought it was INSANE. I always say them not picking him was the beginning of the end for them.

Even knowing he missed the workout, I would have drafted him because he's from Lefrak City and that's as NY as you get. Who cares if he plays behind Sprewell and Houston, he was already amazing.

Haha you and i remember that time differently, Artest was a brick factory!! Missed ariza definitely. He was basically danny green this year except he made the shot instead of missed

I'll agree with one thing though, it was fun watching him headlock other players and the other guy gets called for a foul... good times

I mean Pacers would've maybe won a championship or at least go to the Finals without Ron starting the Malice at the Palace.

And still, he was for a very short clip in his career a DPOTY and All-NBA caliber player. Could've been a legit 2nd option on any championship contender.

That’s the risk teams take when evaluating players as there are pro prospects in every team sport who have obvious top percentile talent, but also many sues that have historically prevented players from reaching anywhere near their potential, from being positive contributors to the lockkerom/team unity, etc.

Before hindsight, nothing is “correct,” but just probabilities that something will happen. Artest panning out the way he did despite issues that derail most athletes is an exception most likely.

When artest played on the knicks briefly at the end of his career, he said it never would've worked in NY being that young with money in the city. As bad as the weis pick was, there's more proof for you.

It's also too bad he didn't find a psychiatrist before the malice at the palace. He sorted out his psychological issues later on with the lakers. Good to see him doing well though.

Nah.

Artest was averaging 24.6/6.1/3.4 on 49/41/92 with elite defense in the short sample size before the malice in the palace. He was an All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year the year before that. Jermaine ONeal was in his prime averaging 20/10 with 2 blocks per game. Reggie was on the backend of his career but was still effective too. They had won 61 games and gotten to the Eastern Conference Finals the year before and added Stephen Jackson in his prime to the mix.

I definitely remember that Pacers team as legit contenders, and many spoke of them as favorites to come out of the East.

The year of the brawl he was in the early conversation for MVP. He was absolutely dominating on both ends of the floor.

Didn't he break some of MJ's ribs when MJ was training to make a comeback?

McDyess was 30 and averaged less than 10 points in 23mpg that season...

The previous season was the first with Rich Carlisle as coach and Artest/O'Neil were just starting to come into their prime and their series against Detroit was very close. The Pacers added prime Stephen Jackson and were noticeably improved from the previous season going into their second year with Carlisle, while the Pistons were about the same, if not worse, than the previous season. They were comparable on defense to the Pistons and significantly better on offense. They also blew out the Pistons in the game when the malice happened. They were absolutely the favorites to come out of the East that year.

Wow thats a shame because I imagine he would have been a great fit for the Knicks.
