What Next? League expansion or relocations

Post#1 » by AmusingFiddle » Tue Jan 26, 2021 8:33 pm

I know this topic has probably been discussed upteen times in this forum. Would have loved to add a poll, don't know yet how....lol

I think the NBA should expand to TWO additional teams (Seattle (a must), Vegas/Kansas City/Vancouver).

However, I also believe that NBA should work with owners to relocate teams in smaller markets to markets with a bigger audience. Most owners in smaller markets are forced to either penny pinch on player salary or fan experience due to lack of revenue their teams generate. If it wasn't for revenue sharing this would be a major problem.

What's stopping them? Lease agreements, tax subsidies, or the owners just plain lazy?

Don't get why people are still so gaga over relocation. You do understand that whatever team gets relocated will just be the new Sonics and the city of whatever team gets relocated will just become the first candidate for expansion if it ever happens right?

Absolutely. It's like totally unfair they get paid millions but some have to play in cities that aren't in those states. They're like human too and stuff.

Let Seattle decide if they want an expansion team (usually risky but look at the Vegas Golden Knights for a successful model) or take on the Timberwolves. There's talent on the roster, but ownership/leadership/coaching needs to change. And that fan base would be stellar.

Markets in play -- Seattle, Vegas, Vancouver, Louisville. A couple scenarios I'd like to see.

Scenario 1 - Vancouver gets an expansion
- Minnesota goes to Seattle, aligns to Western Conference
- Expansion team in Vegas, aligns to Western Conference
- Expansion team in Vancouver, aligns to Western Conference
- Memphis moves to Eastern Conference

Scenario 2 - Louisville doesn't get an expansion, but a relocation
- Expansion team in Seattle, aligns West
- Expansion team in Vegas, aligns West
- Minnesota moves to Louisville, aligns East

I live in Mexico City (not actually called D.F. anymore), and even though there are a lot of basketball fans here, there really are way too many problems with trying to get an NBA team here for it to happen.
If there were to ever be a professional US sports team here, it would most likely be an NFL team (Way more NFL fans here than NBA fans), but even that is most likely never going to happen.
Now Seatlle - that I actually do see happening in the next few years!

Read on Twitter

It’s in the NBA’s interest that in Seattle a new team is formed,” Taylor said. “It’s an economic decision that’s in the interest of all of the owners.”

We’ve already had the discussion as owners,” Taylor said during the radio interview. “I’m on the committee, I know that. We’ve had the discussion within the owners group of what we’re going to do and what the future holds for those franchises.”

If they start a new team out there,” Taylor said of Seattle, “that team is going to have to pay maybe $2 billion to get started out there. And they pay those to the other owners.”

Kind of like the NY Knicks/evil empire, Los Angeles Lakers and clippers, they should get rid of the teams from the whiny small market cities, and place them adjacent to a team already in a big market or big following. Miami, GSW, Dallas, Chicago, etc should get another one. That way you can lessen traveling.

Drop it to 24. So we don't have to watch g league teams like pistons, rockets, Wolves, magic or thunder.

i feel like both of these should be so far down the list of things the NBA needs to fix but capitalism gonna capitalism

if I had to pick then relocation...no way should the league expand with how watered down it is already.

Someone makes this mistake every time this thread pops up.

15 + 2 = 17
15 + 1 = 16

If the NBA adds two new expansion teams, both located in the west, how many teams would move east to create a balanced 16 teams in each conference?

I feel like a middle school teacher over here. It's simple arithmetic.

I actually agree with this in theory. Zero point in small market teams existing. This isn't the NFL.

I suspect expansion is more likely than relocation in the next 5-10 years, relocation usually leaves a bad odor.
