Dorian Finney-Smith: No 3, No D, Future Chinese Role Player

I'm so fed up with this bum. It's an absolute con how he somehow falsely tricked people into believing he's a 3 & D player when he's horrendous at both.

33% on only WIDE OPEN THREES (33% for his career). 53% TS. And he gets absolutely SMOKED on D. -0.7 DBPM, 114 DRtg. He can't guard post players or strong wings, can't guard quick guards. Who TF can he guard? Can't rebound. Can't pass. Can't do ****. This guy shouldn't be a rotation player, let alone starting.

A big reason Dallas sucks is because guys who can't make wide open threes OR play defense proliferate the roster.

This bum better start packing his bags for China soon.

He's a mediocre 3&D player, it's not his fault he gets minutes. He can guard above average scorers. Should be your 3rd best of that type if you're contending.

No, he's not. Is 33% on wide open threes mediocre? Pretty sure it's well below league average. He can't guard a wooden chair. Negative DBPM, eye test is way worse. I watch him get used nightly by role players like Garrett Temple and Toscano Anderson.

So to become a Chinese citizen you just have to suck at basketball?

Well he does bring value for the contract he has. But his true role is to play with 100% energy for 12 minutes a game on a good team, not start for a top team in the West. He is not close to that type of player

Its not that bad this early in the season considering your normal variance. If he hits 3 more attempts out of the 75 hes taken he's at last years efficiency.

And Lukas below 30 percent at the moment....

Some people have no clue about sample size, hot and cold streaks. Maybe he won’t shoot 37.6% on 3’s like he did last season but he’s also one of the Mavs best defenders. Plus he’s recovering from Covid.

Wow, a lot of awful takes here.

He's shot 890 threes over his career. His career 3PT%? 33%. This year? 33%. So no reason to expect it to go up. He had one fluke shooting year last year that was decent. Every other year he's been 29%-31%. Because, he's in fact a **** shooter.

Yes, comparing Luka shooting contested stepbacks as a top 5 player carrying his team is totally analogous to a guy standing in the corner shooting WIDE OPEN THREES.

Please try better next time.

LOL. You can almost taste the irony. Yes, some people indeed have no clue about sample size...people like...YOU!

Is 890 threes a fair sample size? Because his career 3PT% on that sample size is...33%. Same as this year. He's now had 4 years shooting 29-33% from three. So what's the actual outlier here, counting carl?

No, he isn't. Luka, James Johnson, JRich, Green, and Iwundu are all better defenders.

Bingo. His contract tells you who he is; its tough to blame him when its just simply the Mavs don't have enough talent to make him the 8th man like he's paid to be.

Not sure I buy any of this. You're all over his career shooting for some reason, but he's clearly improved as a shooter considering the 1st 2 seasons of his career were below 30%. He's at 35% over his last 3 seasons. He's not a good 3-point shooter but he's not upsettingly bad. He might still hit last season's mark if the Mavs fortune improves a bit.

He's not an amazing defender, but he really stood out last year in the playoffs for being the one who could remotely hang with Leonard. He's not going to stop big wings, but he can hold his own a bit. I've never gotten married to any defensive metrics, so I don't see them as proof of his bad defense. Bballref doesn't like his defense, RAPTOR does. I don't really care either way, I see him as a solid (not elite) defensive wing who has enough size, length and motor to add defense on the wings and helping in the paint. He shouldered a lot of defensive load last year.

He's not having a good season so far (and has only played 14 games). But this feels a little harsh on the boy.

I actually think he is a good value player and that this thread is just Luka fans throwing a fit to justify why Luka isn't getting it done.
