Is lonzo really a good complimentary player for Zion?

Post#1 » by Pelon chingon » Fri Feb 5, 2021 8:40 pm

I remember there were many fans saying Lonzo is the perfect complimentary player next to Zion but I think that's untrue this far in. Sure he throws some lobs and stuff but I think a player with more offensive firepower would serve Zion better. Should N.O look to move on from that pairing and what could he net in return?

Lonzo isn't a good complimentary player for anyone. The guy flat out stinks.

Honestly Zo isn't good enough to deserve his own thread on the GB. With that said the Pels need to surround Zion with more shooters. Redick is almost washed at this point. Lonzo has been given enough opportunity and I doubt he will ever be a good enough shooter.

Zion needs players to spread the floor for him so he has space to dominate in the paint.

Correct. He's maybe the backup PG on a good team, nothing more.

People think because Lonzo is a good passer in transition that it's a great fit, but Zion doesn't need a playmaker in transition, he needs a playmaker who can get him cleaner looks out of pick and roll and half court situations. Lonzo is a detriment in the half court, and guys like Zion and Ingram really don't need someone to get them the ball when they run the break, they're plenty capable on their own. It's not very hard to score in transition with that kind of horsepower.

I honestly don't know who he's a good complimentary player for until he becomes a threat in a set offense.

If Myles Turner was rly being shopped, Pelicans should've got him instead of bringing in Adams. Zion is kinda like Giannis where you need the perfect team around him, and then he's a beast.

Lonzo is a bench player, guys. Useful and valuable in his own way, but a bench player nonetheless.

He would excel in LA with Kawhi and PG imo.

Someone with more gravity would be better, pretty obvious watching Pels games teams are comfortable collapsing into the paint and living with our shooters hot or cold nights.

BUT I think it's unfair to single out Lonzo simply because you're talking about the league leader in paint points.. He's going to get doubled regardless. And it's not like Zion is struggling... 23ppg on 59%fg is hardly a reason to pick on his teammates issues.

Not at all which is why he’s getting traded.

So what would N.O realistically ask for in return for Lonzo?

lonzo is an open court pg.

almost worthless in half court.

he's a niche player but the good thing is he has so many faults he's bound to be better tomorrow than he was yesterday

Zion at Duke weight we would ideally see him in transition a lot more and we would see the benefits more of the Lonzo skill set. Lonzo is also a big good defender at the guard position. Then in the half court, he needs to be able to play off the ball so Ingram is the primary ball handler and Lonzo needs to be able to hit open 3s and make quick decisions with the ball.

I think the potential is there, but as of right now that jumper is far from consistent and Zion isnt much of a consistent transition threat either.

The thing is, you dont want a ball dominant PG because ideally Ingram and Zion should continue to see the ball more and more in the half court as this year progesses and as the years progress. Those are your foundation guys and their games actually have been meshing pretty damn well in the half court.

So ideally you want a non ball dominant PG that is a 3&D guy that makes smart decisions. I think Lonzo has that potential, but I can definitely see why the Pels would be losing patience with him and looking to move on. From here on out, I think every move the Pels make should all be about, how can we make the roster fit better around Zion and Ingram. That should be the only concern.

You know who'd be good with Zion? Tyus Jones.
