2nd best defensive player in NBA

Post#1 » by SUPERVILLAIN » Thu Feb 25, 2021 4:07 pm

1. Rudy Gobert (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2056434)

PS go ahead nominate a player who deserves to be included in the next poll

Is there some kind of inside joke that I'm missing as to why LeBron is an option on this poll?

LeBron is currently 4th in defensive rating only behind Gobert, Turner and Embiid.

Gotta respect the numbers. I got it from Statmuse.

For me this is between Giannis and Embiid, neither of which are putting their best foot forward on defense this year. I'm going to give the slight edge to Embiid because the primary big is more important than the secondary/help big man role that Giannis plays. Would be interesting to see Giannis play the 5 more for sure.

Based on the talk around the board, I expect this pick to be Simmons. He did harass Lillard really well after all, and that's how most people see defense.

First of all Gobert isn't #1. Go on YouTube and you'll find highlights of him getting destroyed on the parameter. The best defender is Giannis followed by Embiid.

Getting destroyed on the parameter in a YouTube clip is pretty damning. Don't know how anyone can argue against that.

Bam and Davis are the two best when it actually matters, because they can’t be targeted on defense by any sort of scheme...they’re elite defenders regardless.

We’ve seen Gobert get picked apart by elite PnR offenses, because he doesn’t have the mobility to contain them. We’ve seen Giannis get picked apart as a man defender, because he also doesn’t have the greatest lateral quickness and he’s too undisciplined in terms of close outs and reaching.

Giannis got destroyed defensively against Miami and committed one of the alltime dumb fouls on Jimmy at the end of the game to lose the game on free throws

Embiids defense got exposed against us last playoffs without Ben Simmons too. We were exposing his porous pick and roll coverage and weak perimeter defense too. It was so easy carving them up without Ben

Its wild how ppl still run with this "Rudy cant defend perimeter" when hes far better than Embiid in perimeter coverage, pick and roll defense and switching

So Simmons came second in the first poll for best DPOY and is now coming second in this poll for 2nd best DPOY. Yeah that makes sense....

I've seen Gobert get blown by and beat on the parameter. He isn't the perfect defender, so having him at #1 is disingenuous. He's been beat before. He's better than average, but not the best. You can't be the best and have highlights of you getting beat on the defensive side.

Literally everybody has had highlights put on them on defense, wtf?

Gobert eviscerated Giannis with a poster the last game they played. I guess GA's DPOY should be revoked??? Dude is trash on defense if he got boomed on by Rudy /s

For real though. Great defenders will be put in highlights at times simply because they put themselves in the position in the first place. Give me the guy who tries to block the dunk at all costs anyday as opposed to the dude who side steps and let's them go by uncontested

Btw, it's "perimeter"

I mean, all those times I see him alter shots and is a complete dominant force out there, then there's a youtube clip of him getting destroyed on the parameter....holy ****, mind blown man.

I feel like so often people associate offense with defense, even in threads specifically about defense.

There is no reason Turner should be receiving as little votes as he is, outside of the fact that most of the other names are star players/big names.
