He has always had a heart condition and has had several surgeries, both he and the Nets new this going into the contract. What changed though is that previously it has been manageable and likely no longer is. I don't know the extent of the incident that led to his retirement, but between the scare it gave him and most likely the advice from his personal physician, it's likely that it could no longer be managed without significant risk.
I am glad to see him retire so he can enjoy his life. I find accusing him of sterling a contract somewhat offensive.
