Is Stephen Curry playing better than his 2016 season? (ADDED POLL)

Post#1 » by Hoopstar23 » Mon Apr 19, 2021 1:53 am

Serious question? I think currently hes playing better than his 2016 version which many believe to be one of the GOAT seasons :o but his team is really bad... i hope Myers get this guy some help like Beal or Siakam or even KAT... I think he has maybe 3 years of this level left in him... Discuss...

Remember in 2016 when they key to slow steph was rough him up and be physical? That doesent work anymore. Hes way stronger now.

Double teams dont work most of the time, you need to send a triple. No clue how hes averaging 31 like this. Its honestly madness. Half his team is being left wide open. Dudes a god amongst men. Top 10 player all time.

I made this in january but it was premature. This guy is able to defend better, his midrange is better, his better at the rim and at drawing fouls. The only thing he doesn’t do better is score against switches, and that’s because I think switch defenders got better at perimeter defense since 2016

He separates from physical defenders a lot better than before as well

His dribble is worse, imo. Nothing will ever touch his February 2016 run.

He probably has to play harder than his 2016 version due to roster but the league has caught up offensively and defensively so his PER and impact stats are down.

In an absolute sense, maybe. Relative to his peers, no.

2015-16: 31.5 PER - 0.318 WS/48 - 11.9 BPM - 11.37 RPM
2020-21: 26.7 PER - 0.209 WS/48 - 8.3 BPM - 8.56 RPM

The advanced figures make it pretty clear that his contribution to winning isn't as great in 2020-21 as it was in 2015-16. So he isn't better, relative to his peers, in 2020-21 than he was in 2015-16. That's unambiguous. Nevertheless, it is still possible that he is a better player now than he was 5-seasons earlier.

The difference is that the league has improved out of sight from a shot-making perspective. In 2015-16 the league's TS% was 54.1%, whereas in 2020-21 it has improved to 57.1%. Curry's TS% is practically identical in 2015-16 and 2020-21. Curry's largely the same guy but the advantages created by his shot making have diminished - leading to those less impressive impact metrics. Curry's relative dominance has been undermined by Curry's own success - teams have gone all in on the things that made Curry so dominant in the first place.
