Opinion: Russillo is the best NBA podcaster

Post#1 » by Hook_Em » Wed Jun 9, 2021 1:14 am

There’s a lot of good ones out there; Lowe, Simmons, the Ringer folks, Ex-players, Kwame (for now), Habertstroh etc….

Russillo might not have the best takes but you don’t (or I don’t at least) listen just to agree. I do think his delivery puts him over the top.

I would like to be friends with him.

I like him with Bill Simmons. I used to love the one with Ben Golliver and Michael Pina, but Ben moved on.

Zach Lowe is the best writer, for sure, but I think his podcasts fall a bit short on entertainment value, at least, in comparison to Simmons and Russillo.

Different strokes, I guess. He's like nails on a chalkboard for me, which makes him a non-starter as a generalist.

Gimme Lowe's, Dunc'd On, No Dunks (ex The Starters) or even JJ Redick's.

I think the only one less listenable than Russillo's for me is Windhorst's, he's just a clown. Woj is also boring af, definitely not his wheelhouse.

I honestly like all of them. Except the ESPN pod's, those suck across the board.

Bill Simmons
Russilo
Lowe
Chad Ford
Duncan / Hollinger
Redick

I listen to all of them

i think he's the best or one of the best writers, but his podcasts are boring. especially when he starts having small-talk conversations with his guests.

russillo has a great voice for podcasts.

His podcasts used to be better. Now he does this forced phoney small talk nonsense at the beginning of every podcast that goes on far too long and tries to talk like a millennial. Ruins the podcast for me.

Yeah, he’s cool af. Paid his dues and not cocky. BBIQ is good, but not over there top. Should hire a stats intern to beef up his work

The best NBA related podcast is still JJ Redick's Old man and the Three, just for the variety of guests and the quality of production but I like Russillo. The man has a certain level of self awareness that is rare in the opinion and sports radio business. He understands his limitations and the fact that he is often reacting to events that happened a day ago and there are already a couple dozen takes out there polluting the internet. I don't even think NBA is his main sport as he feels more at home talking college football or the NFL but he always comes to shows prepared, has a coherent argument, even if it is not right, doesn't contradict himself, owns up to his bad takes when they happen and last but not least, he's not out there running favours for agents like Windhorst or any of the other NBA reporters.

Don't often listen to his solo podcast but I do find his pairing with Simmons to be a lot of fun.

Still Zach Lowe for me.

The good thing about Russillo is he calls SImmons on his BS sometimes, like his Boston bias, or the stupid % takes. I like Simmons as he is entertaining, but it's nice to see somebody laugh at some of the things he says.

Worst has to be ESPN one, mainly because of Windhorst.

Maybe I'm hearing things differently, but Russillo always comes across as a smug, smarter-than-thou type of commentator. Combine that with Bill Simmons arrogance and that makes that podcast un-listenable to me.
