Middleton or Holiday - Who Was More Valuable to the Bucks This Postseason?

Post#1 » by picc » Thu Jul 22, 2021 7:49 am

Overall postseason, first round to finals. Which player was more valuable to the team overall?

Playoff stats:

Middleton - 24/5/8 on 55/34
Holiday - 17/9/6 on 48/30

And obviously Jrue's elite defense has to be factored in. Which player was more valuable to the team overall? Middleton's scoring carried them down the stretch many times. Does Holiday's defense and playmaking make up for it?

Middleton. Holiday was a total brick master and I can't look past that when comparing him to Middleton who was basically our closer and went on some insane scoring stretches

This is going to be a lopsided thread.

A better question would be Holiday vs Bledsoe
Didn't like the Coby White pick. Preferred Rui. Now go out and make me look stupid Coby!

I get that Midds was their closer. Hit huge shots. All of that. He was still very inconsistent offensively. Jrue was too, but his defense was a constant in every game and helped keep the contests in a position to MIdds to close in the first place. Was a much better playmaker throughout too.

Not saying Middleton isn't a good choice. But just writing off Holiday because he shot like crap a lot ignores the whole other side of the ball. Arguably the one that won them the title (defensive side).

I swear the only way people love Holiday is because they are comparing him to Bledsoe.

The guy shot 40% from the field and 30% from 3.

In the regular season the guy shot 50% and nearly 40% from 3.

The drop off is huge. He nearly shot them out of some games. Good defense doesn't make up for that. His going to have to be much better next postseason, because all the other teams will be healthier.

Middleton in vacuum, maybe Jrue in this case because he was our only guard and he disrupted the **** out of everyone's offense. Then again his scoring was all time inefficient so I dunno.

He hit the most game tying or go ahead shots in the final two minutes of playoff games over the last 25 years.

He didn't just hit huge shots. He hit a ton of them.

I dunno is exactly what im getting at. Midds scoring at the end of games is visual and visceral. Jrue disrupting an opposing offense for 40 minutes a night doesnt look as pretty but it could do just as much to influence the point margin to Mil’s favor over the course of a whole game.

I get it. Not saying he isnt the choice. But like was said in the midds for finals mvp thread, the players that keep the game close enough for Midds to hit big shots need to be considered.

Hard

I think unless you replace Jrue with Marcus Smart/Thybulle/Butler, It's Jrue

Understand Middletons fantastic offensive output, But Jrue wore down CP3 and took advantage of the Suns smaller guard lineup which means they couldnt run the Payne/CP3 match up, as Jrue just picked up CP3 from the back court, and made him work his way up every time and wore CP3 down

Don’t get the Jrue love. It seemed like for every moment of brilliance in the Finals, he committed 2 or 3 boneheaded plays as a trade off

He seems like a nice guy and all but got to go Middleton for sure

I actually think it’s a lot closer than people think. Holidays scorin was trash but his defense and playmaking were elite. He rebounded well too.

Middleton on the other hand was a way better scored and the bucks closer. He also rebounded at a high level, defended and passed the ball really well too.

I, like everyone else think Middleton but Jrue was really underrated, he was great.

Right. Jrue has an attrition effect on opposing teams. You put him on someone, and they are less aggressive/less effective over the course of the entire game. He singlehandedly blows up transition opportunities. He makes good players defer to others. It doesn't look as good as hitting a 20 footer with 40 seconds left, but it puts you in a position to go-ahead with that shot.

If Jrue shot a little better he'd have an argument, but he had some significant struggles on offense for more than a few games during the run. His defense was huge and a major factor in Milwaukee's success, but Khris was awesome as the Bucks progressed and has to be the answer here (even if he wasn't always consistent himself).

Middleton was the offense in clutch moments to close out the Hawks and Nets. Holiday was a menace on defense though defending everybody on the court.

I would say Middleton offense was more valuable overall.
