What teams need a whole new direction?

The Pacers - They are the definition of a treadmill team. It doesn't look like they are getting better anytime soon.

Timberwolves - I don't see Kat and D'lo leading them anywhere.

Blazers - I like the players they have but they have the same outcome every year.

Right now Boston is going all in on creating a winning team next year (avoiding making any small trades that won't really help them this year, but puting themselves in great position next year). If they can get Beal next year, they will have a really good team that is right up there with the rest of the top teams in the league. I would hardly calling that beating a dead horse (now if the Beal thing falls through, and / or they don't get another top star to go with the Jays, then yeah, go ahead and call it the dead horse thing)

Also, it's kind of funny hearing a Laker fan say this. The Lakers aren't quite beating a dead horse, instead they are beating a 75 year old Nag that can hardly stand on it's own four feet anymore, and is going to require lots and lots of resting just to make it through the season.

There’s beating a dead horse, making moves to appease fanbase/ owner, trying to make a splash by acquiring a (super) star, and finally, thinking critically about fit and where your team is realistically in the timeline you pitched.

To me, Chicago fits the first three above… their clickbait acquisitions hardly fit and the likelihood is they end up on the middle or worse at the bottom. Shoutout Gar/Pax Woj see you!!

I really think the Pacers are going to be very strong this year. Not a bad contract on the team, deep, significant head coach upgrade. I can easily see them in the race for a 4/5 seed.

They also snagged Chris Duarte, whom the Warriors coveted for his shooting. Should contribute this year.

As of now, the obvious answer is the Pacers.

They were not good enough to make a noise in the playoffs. Meanwhile not bad enough to get a high draft pick. And this offseason they did nothing to change that. They are just running it back. Still no star or top prospect to build the franchise around.

Pacers have been stuck in mediocrity for quite sometime and they seem to be too comfortable in it.

OKC, the multi year tank and continual kicking the can down the road is a terrible look.

Even with Donnie gone, it's still the same nonsense. This off season was putrid from a Mavs fan perspective.

trade the euro then. its hard to win title when the goat is too good you cant even tank during rookie season.
Dallas needs to do better job in FA similar to Lakers.

Sure they did. They traded one major contributor (Holiday) while letting one of their biggest offensive threats leave in FA (McBuckets) who was 2nd on the team in Off Win Shares.

Mavs are tapping on the horse a bit. The jazz are full on beating it. The blazers have pummeled the horse into a fine powder at this point.

Well to be fair, they've only been tanking for 1 year and it was forced after westbrook/PG13 wanted out.

I'm not a big fan of shameless tanking, but let's give them a year or 2 to see if Presti can consolidate those picks into something to add to SGA

Celtics are holding out for next season (Beal/Dame?) But if that fails, mighthts have to add them to the list.

Not sure about beating a dead horse, but the Bulls mortgaged their future this offseason for a team that peaks as a #5 seed at best....but more likely a fringe playoff team most years. I can't fault them though....I would probably go crazy as a fan if the product was garbage for so long too.

Pacers just don't really tank in general, so this iteration they may need to change some pieces but having Sabonis/LeVert/Brogdon is a good place to start because they can be kept or flipped for pieces. Turner may be on the way out already this season but he should bring back something decent too.

Blazers need to switch something up, and I think the Spurs should bottom out since they've been trying their best with guys like DeRozan and LMA as their head pieces.

Bulls are a common answer in the thread but I think it's a bit misguided. Yeah, they may cap out at a certain place but then what? If we're assuming the East is only Nets/Bucks/Heat/Sixers as legit contenders should everyone else just.. not try? I don't know, I think people go too far in thinking teams should tank or reset even if they're a 5th seed and have a talented roster. It's one thing if you're continually a 8th-13th seed at best like the Magic were for 4-5 years or like Detroit before that, but if you have a good team sometimes all it takes is one guy to get frustrated and trade out and then guess what.. you have the assets to do a deal AND your team has players the disgruntled player may want to play with.

Raptors were in a similar position before Kawhi came and it worked out for you guys. You had a good team but it was never going to win a championship. All it takes is one or two moves sometimes, and tanking/being bad on purpose can backfire if too many teams are bad/trying to do similar things/you get unlucky in the lottery. If you went the other route... no chip.
