When does rooting for your team to lose not become fun anymore?

Post#1 » by Dominator83 » Thu Sep 2, 2021 5:20 am

As a Bulls fan, I've seen an awful lot of people trash talking us for the recent moves. Most think they should have blown it up and tanked again. We have been rooting for losses every night for 4 years now. For me, personally, it will be refreshing to finally be able to go into a season rooting for wins again.

Seems like too many fans of too many teams want their teams to lose now. My question is, when does it become old and pointless. For a team such as Sacramento, how is a "fan" a fan if you've been rooting for your team to lose every night for the last 15 years?

When an outsider that doesn't follow (say a wife or something) sees you wearing the teams shirts, watching the games, etc sees you rooting for losses, you explain that it's to get better in the long run. Fast forward 3 years, still rooting for losses to get better in the long run. Fast forward another 3 years, still rooting for losses to get better in the long run. The cycle goes on and on. Anybody at that point would say "what's the point in being a fan when for a decade you haven't wanted your team to win a game?"

For me I can get on board with that for a few years. But for you guys on here, how long until it gets old?

When you're supposed to be winning instead

Also, when you accidentally win instead of lose

When you still win just enough games to miss out on higher lottery odds

When you move down the lottery despite having a bottom record

When you miss out on the player you hoped you get

When you draft a lottery bust despite having such a horrible season

It's never fun to root for your team to lose.

The best that you can do is just accept the fact that sometimes losing is what's best for business.

But it's NEVER EVER fun to lose.

Surprisingly not bad when your used to it

You root for the young players to show potential, and that's like any fantasy league, hoping for individual results

Then there is the same rush of rooting for the other team down the stretch of games as your own team

ever heard of one step back for two steps forward? its a famous historic term but i understand casuals dont want rings and only wants perennial playoff runs like those 4 all star hawks. at least hawks fans werent delusional and knew they had to blow up which they did to only come back stronger.

no the nba rewards losing which is why it is fun to lose like the warriors fans embracing tanking and dreaming of admiral wiseman joining curry to make another title run. its just not fun when its become decades like wolves, kings but those are few extremes.

As a longtime Minnesota Timberwolves follower... I feel like this is a trick question.

As a suns fan that watched every game when we were bad...you always root for your team to win...you just aren't disappointed if you lose.

About 3 seconds to be honest? I'll always be a Bucks fan but when we get back on the tankathlon I'm back to 10 min highlights at most. I don't agree with the draft logic, if a team sucks send it to the GLeague until they're ready to compete again, and I don't care how many billions the owner paid and how many he will lose in the process.

When you see no progress. And talent you drafted with high picks over years is average at the best and missing taking better prospects. Whole point od losing is getting best talent in draft quick and fast so you are not stuck losing and repeating situation. For instance Bulls and Hawks. Bulls did terrible. Hawks did good. We both in similar time rebuilded for same period. Key was recognizing quick and fast by GM best players and making key decisions to get those players. Thats why Bulls current GM AK has my full support. He took trash from previous GM out quick and fast and retooled team with basically no assets

The best feeling is the turning point season, like I imagine the Bulls will have this year. Once you get up to that plateau though, expectations creep in and begin to ruin the fun again.

As someone who got into NBA basketball as a kid with the OG Hornets who were consistently good losing got old a long time ago.

You keep waiting and waiting to have a player talented enough to lead a team to the playoffs every year and it just doesn't happen. Instead of watching the playoffs you hope to get lucky with the lottery draw, which also almost never happens. But I'm a loyal guy so I stick with them and hope that the years of losing will one day payoff and make winning all the more special.

Doesnt become fun when you waste a whole season away only to draft Frank Nittlekina and Kevin Knox

Never did that really, it means your team can't coach and/or develop players and is just hoping they will receive a finished or almost finished product/god-given talent to turn the things around.
