I see this constantly as a knock on Kobe. It is true that Kobe shot 6/24 in that game 7, but everyone either ignores or doesn't know the context.

That was a knock-out defensive game, where everyone was showing their nerves/ fatigue from the previous 6 games.

Why does no one bring up Ray Allen's 3/14 or Paul Pierce's 5/15? Pau (who some call the the "true MVP" of the series) shot 6/16 as Laker's big.

The truth is, it was an 83-79 game. It was a slow/ slugfest of a game where everyone shot poorly.

Kobe also had 15 rebounds, which no-one brings up either.

I don't think the 6/24 is a relevant knock on Kobe at all.

He was fine in the second half but his first half was horrendous. It wasn't just that he couldn't hit anything, almost every shot that he took was terrible. The worst version of Kobe showed up early, but he did eventually settle down.

Kobe was a great player, silly to suggest otherwise. One bad game shouldn't change the perception of a long and productive career.

Thank you for letting us know about the Basketball-Reference table feature, that will be the main takeaway from this thread.

He was FMVP chasing. That's what happens when someone chases for things. He got the award, but it's debatable he deserved it because he almost shot them out of it chasing for accolades.

It was a bad game all around

KG not rebounding.
Rondo providing anti-spacing.
Everybody bricking.

I think he even later admitted that. I remember some interview where he said he wanted it TOO MUCH in the first half and he had to calm himself down and let the game come to him more in the second half.

There’s nothing to suggest this is true. He was playing like he always plays. Sometimes the shots go in and sometimes they don’t.

Oh trust me as a C's fan I remember Ray's egg in this game. He actually had a lot of stinkers in the playoffs. At least this time he had Artests knee to blame

When you boil this whole series down all I remember was Kobe sealing it with the dagger, and our bigs getting emasculated on the boards....Danny and Doc developed a weak philosophy on rebounding and it got exposed routinely against teams who could hit the glass. This obviously being the most egregious example

Strange thread to bring up out of nowhere to try and prop up Kobe with. Just let it go.

Agree, offensive boards won us the game and series

He showed up nervous and almost cracked in the first half. And no it wasn't the defense. He simply was choking harder than any time I've ever seen him, maybe more than any big star ever.

I think the fact that it was the team that humiliated him 2 seasons prior, and the fact that it's the Celtics in particular, and what losing twice to them would mean to his legacy in LA, really got to him.

I actually think that it's one of his greatest achievements that he managed to come back in the 2nd half and controbuted the way he did to help win the game. I think almost all players would've crumbled after the half like that.

But it wasn't the defense. He was truly having a moment in that first half.

He was pressing. It was going to be a Westbrookesque failure, but Phil kept him on the bench at the start of the fourth so he wouldn’t go full Mambtard.

Metta was the MVP of that game. He really stepped up when the series was on the line. Kobe was just gassed and his jumper was flat.

Fantastic. One of the hardest fought defensive games on our era. Kobe won, period. 15 rebounds in a brick fest. GOAT candidate.

It seems like OP ripped those tables off of Basketball Reference, but these can be made with BBcode. It's similar to how it's done in HTML. Here's an example (formatted for clarity):

im not a lakers fan, so i hated when the kobester had the ball in the final qtrs against opposing teams because you knew he was never afraid to TAKE the shots necessary to get them over the hump. HOW MANY TIMES DID HE BING HIS TEAMS ACK FROM THE DEAD AND PUT THEM IN POSITION TO WIN?? how many countless times in the playoffs and championship games did this guy get the lakeshow over???? more damn time than 6-24!

laker fans were blessed to have a modern day/"wannabe" jordan on their squad. he put fear in your hearts and nutsacks when he had the ball and they were chipping away at your leads. ASIDE from Jordan and Bird, you don't ever want to face Kobe when it mattered most (and dont lie and sa curry or KD is greater or more cold-blooded). 5x champion, greatest skilled player, and the only person who could beat MJ 1-1 because yes, the mamba would steal your damn moves
