Can someone who watches him more regularly comment on Derrick rose's play/athleticism? is he playing like he recovered from career threatening knee injuries or did he use his injuries as a lesson to change up his game in order to stay in the game longer? he seems like he's still got it in some moments but he doesnt make the wreckless lane driving plays anymore. feels like he is playing scared.

He picks and chooses his spots. His first step, speed, vertical, etc, are all maybe 80% of what they used to be. I'm guessing he looks less reckless because as he makes the same plays, he's doing so at "merely" elite athlete speed and explosion rather than generational/near-unbelievable speed + explosion.

He's a different player now than he was back then, he plays with the wisdom and saviness of a great veteran, of course he is one at this point and is still one hell of a closer.

Like others mentioned he still has above average speed and athleticism but he has to make smarter decisions of when to use it, it seems he plays within himself and he knows his body's limits now. I also think his playmaking/floor leadership is more well-rounded now, he makes certain passes I think he wouldn't/couldn't back in his prime. He's been doing great at leading the bench unit for NYK and playing like their 2nd best player..

He is one of the most undervalued underrated players in the NBA.

In his prime Chicago years he was reckless and really unstoppable getting to the basket.

He is a smarter player today. Rose is shooting 47.9% from 3 this season. His 3 was non existent in Chicago.

He’s having a very Grant Hill-esque career arc. An obviously elite talent that was well on his way to being an all time great to end up having his prime being derailed by injuries. Then by the time everyone has kind of forgotten or written him off, ends up being a really quality player who uses his experience, IQ, and craftiness to be an impactful player.

Really great to see Rose still be an impactful player even though we missed his prime years because of injuries.

His speed is still pretty damn incredible. His ability to stop-go stop again, and then attack is just insane.

Agree with everything said on this thread.

I'll say that this is the first year post-injury when Rose has started to take a few more risks at the basket. I wouldn't say that his "above the rim" game is back. Far from it, he's still not going to dunk. But this season he's at least willing to elevate.

He's still a pretty damn good. He can get into the paint and his floater is pretty automatic.

I didn't watch much of prime Rose, so I won't speak on that.

Currently, he takes (and makes) alot of difficult shots. He frequently drives into the paint and has an elite floater. From what I see, thats his best move and favorite. I heard the NYK comentators mention how Rose enjoys be "just a guy" on a team as oposed to the nightly pressues of having to score 30+ per night. He's obviously not the athlete he used to be. I also think betting the Knicks Under on nights Kemba rests might be a smart play, Barrett/Robinson/Randle/Rose i bad spacing. He's a good "floor general" but the lack of spacing he provides really hurts the overall offense against elite defense (Rose can get a bucket though, so a fine 6th man imo)

It’s elite three point shooting which he never had before

Runners and floaters around the rim

One handed, beat my defender with my first step layup

But ya'll remember when he would rise up on a brother too. Can not sleep on that.
Dude used to go hard to the rim, unabated like a muh-fuuuh

First off, Rose has accepted his role as a 25 minute per game guy leading the 2nd unit. He still has enough speed and athleticism to get to the basket, and has greatly improved as a shooter which makes up for the athleticism that he lost. There are some nights where he is quick and athletic, others where he just doesn't have it.

But he has really excelled as a 6th man, microwave scorer type.

If Rose could play 30+ minutes consistently he would be a top 5 PG. That’s how good he has been off the bench

Not trying to be rude, but Rose hasn't played breakneck offense that way in a very long time.

He was forced to change his game due to injuries ofc, and has definitely lost his bounce. But he's still twitchy, has an amazing handle on the ball in the paint still. Just his drives will end up as floater, and running hook looking things, instead of his intense drives into contorted layups (he still does it a bit!).

Now, he's a more reliable option than a ton starting PG's around the league, and I bet a bunch of Knicks fans would agree that he's their best PG. But Rose is cool with being 6th man, he's cool with mentoring, and he just takes it as it goes. I think if Rose was trying to "win now" or "ring chase" he wouldn't have picked NYC. But regardless, his playstyle has evolved to cater to his body, and because of that he's still a great player.

he no longer has top end speed or burst

but he's still fast enough in pnr to get by a trailing defender with floaters

his 3pt shooting has improved. very good catch and 3pt shoot now, not a serious 3pt shooting threat outside of catch and shoot but is proficient

hes no longer being asked to play 36mpg, so isnt played as injured as before

It was one of our "grips" (if you can call it that) when he was in Chicago. He needed to play smarter, continue his dribble, and SLOW DOWN so he could save his body. (And develop a 3 ball as well!) Glad he finally figured it out, even it the road for him to get there was UGLY.
