anyone else find this term really silly? all you actually have to say is "double 'double'" and you get "double double". no need to repeat the word "double"

I like it just the way it is. Double-double is double digits in 2 categories. Just calling it a double would indicate the player reached double digits in only one category

No, it makes sense. One "double" is referring to double digits points, assists, etc. The other "double" is referring to doing it in multiple categories. If you just said "double" it would mean you had 10 points with 0's across the board elsewhere (for example).

Technically, from a grammatical perspective OP is right.

10? I mean, seriously? Sure it has 2 numbers, but it's still 10. It's like freaking out that someone has 10 fingers.
Also what's the deal with lack of common folk in Duniverse? Somebody has to give birth to all those soldiers, make clothes, grow food, entertain etc, etc.
And that's what really grinds my gears

I was once watching a recreational youth game with little kids who didn't really know the rules or how to play. One kid double dribbled, but the gym teacher who was refereeing let it go because it was the kind of game where if you called everything there wouldn't even be a game. Then the kid did it again, and the gym teacher let it go again. Then it happened a third time, and the teacher finally made a call.
The infraction?
"That was a triple double."

Let's say a player gets 12 steals and everything else 1 digit. That's a remarkable single double, right?. If he gets 10 rebounds and 12 steals, you would have to distinguish it. There you have the "double double".

OP and I have had many disagreements in the past and today is not the day that changes. At least I get some sort of satisfaction knowing that my previous arguments against him are now validated.

If you don’t have the term “double double,” you don’t get Chuck roasting Dray for getting a triple single
