Is Anthony Edwards just Wiggins with a motor & ambition ?

Post#1 » by Klayforspicy » Thu Nov 25, 2021 2:56 pm

Without looking at measurements and all that, the 2 players seemingly have the same capabilities on the court. Eerily similar athleticism and skillset...one is just more consistent and "fiery" ?

A more consistent Wiggins with a motor is a perennial all-star

If that's so then GREAT.

Andrew Wiggins with better motor and ambition is a hell of a player.

Just an observation. Carry on :usa:

Ant is way more coordinated, handle is way more natural than Wiggins' ever was. For as much raw athleticism as Wiggins had, he was uncoordinated as hell, especially coming out of college.

Ant has #1 option in his future. Wiggins never did, at least not for anyone that watched him in college.

Definitely Ant is always on, Wiggins always seemed to pick and choose when he played hard.

Ant after the game last night.....

When asked, if he told coach to put him in to start the 4th as he's already played all but 2 minutes in the game already "these are the last 12 minutes of my life, I'm trying to win."

You'd NEVER hear that from Wiggins.

For some players "winning" is finally inking a max contract, the rest of it is just consequential

He doesn't look like 6'4'' to me.

Westbrook is 6'4'', isn't he? Edwards seems way bigger than him.

Edwards supposedly grew 2 inches this past year. So that would make him 6'6.

Ant is probably 6'6'' in shoes.

Anyway, Ant's best comparison is a much bigger Donovan Mitchell, with an even quicker 1st step. Watching Ant do things on the court to me is like watching Donovan Mitchell do things on the court, only Ant is bigger which means he can crash into and finish through contact even against Adams/Valanciunas type bigs, and he is a much better defender than Donovan Mitchell because of the size/length combo. Ant just has some brainfarts around the rim sometimes, that's probably his only real flaw now.

Yeah, people always want to reduce sports to their own values and things that matter in their life like motivation 'wanting it'--most of the time NBA players already work really, really hard and are way more dedicated than any of us are to our jobs--and it's usually just mundane human facts that end up making them mediocre or great. Anyone can learn how to shoot competently, but can your body learn how to shoot from 28 ft away in the small gap before a fast, huge human lunges at you? Anyone can make a few dribbles to dash to the cup, but can your body learn to know exactly (without even thinking) when to cradle the ball when help defense closes on your drive? Almost everyone in the NBA tries very very hard to master all of that stuff, with the best coaches and trainers, and most people don't learn to do it at the best levels. (That's why the 'elite' are elite at it--they do it better than the pack.)

In this case, Edwards has no trouble naturally shaking people and driving on them, and he's pretty intuitive at using his frame and handle to square up and get angles to the cup. Wiggins sucked at dribbling from high school on, it was never a strength and never something his body did naturally, which means he looked awkward and upright when driving from the earliest days. So in the half court he basically became a volume spot-up/pull-up shooter on the Wolves, simply didn't have the raw ability to do the other types of more efficient creation that we think of as 'superstar' type stuff. No amount of 'desire' would've made him great at that and Edwards came into the league great at it and just had to learn simpler things like how to adjust your angles for NBA speed and length and how to absorb contact etc.

You mean like when he's fouled and misses the layup but the refs don't blow the whistle? Happens a lot for him.

Ant has better handles and playmaking than Wiggins...Wiggins handles were very frustrating to watch, used to drive me crazy at times. Ant himself still has good amount of room to grow when it comes to playmaking..his decision making needs to improve in this aspect

He is a better rebounder, passer, and athlete than Wiggins. His shooting mechanism seems more fluid too which hopefully will translate to higher shooting percentages soon.

Just because he has a higher motor & ambition doesn't mean he's a better player/prospect.
