Carlisle/NBCA apologized to Chris Finch for statement made after hiring

The statement put Finch on the hot seat before he had even coached a game and had Rosas, who was fired just before training camp, defending his record of hiring a plethora of people of color in his front office and on the Wolves coaching staff.

When the Timberwolves played Carlisle’s Pacers Monday night, Carlisle made public an apology that was given behind closed doors several months prior.

“We apologized to Chris for that,” Carlisle said. “That wasn’t fair to him. It was no reflection on who he is as a person, coach or anything like that. This summer we got a chance to talk to him about it when we met as an association. It’s pretty clear why he got the job. I’m really happy for him.”

I don't blame anyone for how Rosas acted. It's never really been seen to make a move like that in-season, so it seemed like the reaction was geared more towards Rosas and how he handled it compared to whether Finch was a qualified candidate. Just feel bad some of Minnesota's assistants from last season, like David Vanterpool, who didn't get a shot at the interim tag to add it to their resume for somewhere down the road.

Thank you for that.

I thought it was something like that but couldn't remember for sure and exactly what was said. Uhm ya I believe at the time I said that was beyond messed up for them to publicly come out and say. Talk about a great moment for someone becoming a NBA head coach for the first time and your own coaching association comes out and basically trashes your hire.

"It’s pretty clear why he got the job. I’m really happy for him"

To bad they as the freaking coaches association couldn't have waited just a little to actually talk to the guy before they came out publicly like that. We trashed him, then talked to him and realized nah he is actually great so sorry for trashing you thing is lame to me.

Maybe talk to the guy first, do a little due diligence before publicly speaking. Maybe wait and see if the hire ends up turning out well or not before saying something. Happy for Finch that he has been proving them wrong so far.

Was a total bitch move by Carlisle, basically the head of the coach's union impulsively casting this rookie head coach Finch as the NBA's face of white privilege. What a way to begin the biggest job of your life lol. And iirc Carlisle then proceeded to take the Indy job with the quickness which called to question exactly what kind of diversity search could've possibly went on there

This trend where a new (often white) coach gets hired and then gets brutally criticized by the media and other coaches is pretty disgusting. Same thing happened to Steve Nash. Heck Chauncey billups got character assassinated essentially because becky hammon wasn't hired.

An apology is nice and all, but maybe Carlisle should actually be supportive of rookie coaches in the future instead of sitting there crapping on them because another candidate wasn't hired for the sake of diversity. Maybe Chris Finch actually got hired for his competence as a basketball mind? Shocker.

Just another example that the revolutionary mindset is a corrosion of the character.

He probably was making a good point, but he shouldn’t have named any coaches or organisations and he should have said this is something that’s happened historically and it can be improved upon.

Without that, he just looks like an entitled, hypocritical whiner.

the problem was that they didnt interview anyone iirc and it seemed like a freind deal at the time. The wolves could have done their due diligence unless someone was imminently going to hire finch otherwise.

He never made any good point. It was learned very quickly that Rosas conducted all of his interviews in the preseason and included several POC candidates. Because of covid travel restrictions and NBA policies, he wasn't able to conduct any more interviews mid-season and went back to Finch, who he thought was the best coach at the time.

Of course nobody ran with that story though. It was all about how Finch got the job because he's white.

Carlisle wasn't the only one who said it either. Lillard and some talking head idiots on ESPN should also have kept their mouths shut.

Finch already interviewed for the position... along with several other candidates, including three black coaches.

But the team stuck with Ryan Saunders. This was definitely seen as a nod to Glen Taylor's meddling at the time... and even more so now.

So, Rosas for all his faults, was stuck with an extremely green head coach instead of being able to hire his own guy. After a rough start to his tenure, he wanted to go down with the ship with his own guy if nothing else.

Really, the entire thing was mostly about nothing.

You hire the best person for the job, doesn't matter what race, religion, gender etc. that person is.

Why do people keep saying this?

Rosas interviewed Juwan Howard, Darvin Ham, David Vanterpool and Finch at least. Probably others as well.

Lol sorry. I just keep seeing people regurgitating the same stuff that has already been proven false.

Sorry if what I wrote wasn’t clear. To be clear, I didn’t mean he was probably making a good point about Finch and the Wolves. Finch was a quality coach under Nurse and you could tell he has talent.

I meant that he might have been making a good point about how coaching hires have been done historically and how there might be scope to have more structured consistency across the league. RC clearly didn’t have all the facts on this situation and he shouldn’t have named any specific coaches or teams. :)

what was the issue then? Was it just the prior relationship?

No, you are right about that being the supposed issue, but it was immediately proven false when Rosas stated he had already interviewed minority candidates before the season. For obvious reasons, nobody ever corrected themselves including Carlisle, Dame Lillard, and the media pundits.

It took this long for them to issue an apology about something that was completely false from the beginning.
