Knicks gonna Knicks.

They are once again a below average team with overpaid "stars".

GB analysis:

Team/player did this good thing, so they're good.

Team/player did this bad thing so they're bad.

Thibbs got more out of that roster than just about anyone could last season. Not his fault they made the roster worse. He's not going anywhere.

Ha Ha Ha
Carlisle will be there. The entire roster will change before he's gone.

And to add to that he got a 4/117M extension with a player option.

I really wish the Knicks hadn't jumped the gun but they did. Fournier and Walker were disasters in Boston defensively and the fact they brought in both was even worse. If it was just Fournier for a lesser deal, you could live with it. Kemba is on a decent salary but there are just too many guards playing well(Rose, Quickley, Burks) for him to play. That one's gonna sting.

They were better off waiting to see how Randle would perform this year before giving him that major extension and were better off accumulating more assets in the form of picks/young players than to do what they ultimately did. I remembered in Charlotte how Rozier managed to accumulate 20/4/4 seasons on shooting splits of 44/40/84 on 56TS% before they extended him this past year to a 4/92M deal. The Knicks should've waited to see if Randle could replicate his last year with the same efficiency as the rest of his career indicated a highly inefficient player before last season.

This was a great point regarding Randle. There just wasn’t a need to give him extension, especially after how he played in the playoffs. And this season, his attitude has been horrible. He’s had some games where he has played like he played last year - driving to the hoop, passing well especially out of the high post, and using the 3 to keep the defense honest. Then there are games where he pouts and throws up 3s like he’s Steph Curry.

I dont see it. Charlotte and Cleveland are legit barring injury theyll be in. We'll be in. Embiid will take Philly in. Nets, Bulls, Bucks, Heat are locks. Wizards are the only question if you dont believe in them

The should've cashed in on the narrative of their success and been sellers in the offseason. Instead, they built a treadmill.

What do you think could they have sold off? I didn't hear of any possible moves and no one seems like a particularly good candidate. They just had a typical RS overachiever team, some solid players and a bunch of meh vets who clicked behind a try-hard Thibs defense. Plus GMs aren't casual fans, it's not like they would've said 'wow the Knicks won a lot of games last year, let's give up lotto picks for Elfrid Payton.'

Randle.

To a lesser extent RJ. But mostly Randle.

You don't build around two guys this inefficient and with a minimal impact on winning.

And you don't build around them with more mediocrity in the form of Fournier and washed Kemba.

Randle was expiring this offseason. He is not a "plug and play" kind player of player that would easily fit and upgrade any roster in any system. He holds the ball too much, needs to know the system to make plays. He had a bad season before and never was a really great prospect. Front Offices would not give a haul for any player after one and only great season. I don't think we would profit more than a late FRPs.

Moreover, the Front Office would never disrupt a winning season to break 7 consecutive lottery seasons to get a minor asset and frustrating millions of fans in the process.

Maybe, the value of Randle now, locked in a good contract, is better.

it's coaching. There's a lot of more talented young players sitting because there's overpaid veterans that Thibs trusts. The talent is there. They just need to find the right mix and stick with it. They had a great draft that has been ruined by the offseason signings.

Resigning Randle was not a horrible move considering how much his contract is. 4yr/117M is just over $29M per year. Other guys currently making 28-30M include D'angelo Russell, Gordon Hayward, Brandon Ingram, Wiggins. Nba salaries will also rise in 2024 when a new tv deal is agreed on we'll see role players getting $20-30M regularly

Looks like Randle may have been a 1 season wonder. I still think he can get back to that level but it’s not looking great rn

Russel is over paid
Hayward is a solid wing that can be actually plugged and played on any team
Ingram sucks, i'll give you that. Still could be a useful player on a good/great team.
Wiggins has turned into a great 3&D wing that can be made use of on a great team apparently.

Randles issue is not only is he overpaid, his archetype sucks.

Hes a high usage tweener that isn't particularly great on the defensive end. Pair that up with mediocre to poor efficiency and not many teams have a use for Randle. His best role leads you to a treadmill/middle of the pack team.

Who the heck wants that?

You can add one bad link to a good defense and it ruins the whole thing.

Basically brought back the same team from last year for a higher price plus Fournier. Should have gone after DeRozan or Lowry.
