Steph Curry: "2017 Warriors would win in 6 against the 96 Bulls"

Post#1 » by Freighttrain » Wed Jan 12, 2022 7:35 pm

Curry had a pretty great interview in GQ where he talked about a lot of things, see video below. Asked upon, he mentioned Tony Allen and Avery Bradley were/are his toughest defenders. Another interesting one was whether the 2017 KD Warriors would win against the 73 Bulls. Obviously, he picked his own team as he should, but also called it in 6 which I thought was rather cocky but funny nonetheless. It's at the 0:53 mark. I'll add in a poll cause why not.

The traveling question at 2:47 is 100% percent true, it feels like Curry is challenging the refs to call it on every inbound. LeBron does something similar. It's like when Magic would clearly palm the ball dribbling across halfcourt. I guess it doesn't actually affect the play but is annoying to watch.

I'm a warrior fan and think Chi would win at best 5 probably 6 . Curry and Thompson would be made inefficient by Pippen and Jordan but not vise versa. Curry and Klay maybe have one unconscious shooting game each.

So Rodman and KD would be the key match up.

Yes. Jordan and Pippen offer great perimeter defense, but Curry/KD/Klay is just too much fire power. On the other hand, KD/Klay/Iggy/Livingston is a great rotation to throw at Jordan. GSW in 5 or 6. Honestly I think the 01 Lakers stand a better shot because of the way Shaq would wreck them and foul people out.

2017 Warriors were the greatest team of all-time, and honestly it isnt close. If they actually tried, they would have easily broken the 73-9 record from the previous year. This isnt a hot take.

Im pretty sure both KD and Steph went down with injuries and both missed multiple weeks that season too, and they still easily reeled off 67 wins. Just crazy.

It depends, if you are telling me 96 Bulls would maintain their playing style, then yes, it's easy to see Warriors would win. You just can't beat the "3pt shot is 50% more than 2pt shot" thing no matter how good you are, the difference is just ridiculous. Bulls would need to adapt, if they did, yeah they would win. Jordan would've practiced much more his 3pt shooting before entering the league and in offseasons, same with other players, that's why this comparison will never make sense, the modern teams will always win if you just insert a 90's team in this era, the 3pt strategy is just OP and broken.

The Bulls don't have 2 superstars is the issue. Scottie is not up to KD or Curry's level and Draymond provides similar defense. Draymond can spend a lot of energy on defense saving Curry/KD a little while MJ & Pippin have to cover the 2 best players on GS.

The other issue is if we're talking 90s rules or modern rules. Each team is built/setup for the rules of their time but the Bulls don't have any bigs to punish the Warriors so that might be closer than people think, I'd put the Warriors at like 95% for a 7 game series on modern rules and say 60/40 (Warriors winning) on a 7 game series on 90s rules.

Stupid hypothetical. You wanna have a dream match up, you 'll put yourself vs pre 1993, limitless stamina, Jordan. Its absolutely certain Jordan averages 40+ vs the 2017 Warriors and takes at least one of their 3 perimeter players out of the game, either with defense or by getting in foul trouble or from exhaustion. Bulls in 5.

I'm a big Bulls guy who always defends Jordan/Pippen/the 90s Bulls but the amount of firepower on that team is ridiculous.

Yeah honestly, much like Currys teams just cause the 96 Bulls had the best records of MJs teams doesn't mean it's the best team, at least for this specific matchup. A first 3peat team like 92 would be a better matchup, younger Pip and MJ would be needed to keep up with the pace of GSW.

Kind of weird that Steph specifies the 2017 team and not the Warriors team that eclipsed the Bulls' 72 win mark.

I think with KD in there, yeah, they'd probably beat the Bulls. Though it would be helpful to know what the rules are. Are we playing with 90's rules? If Steph and Klay are getting beat up and held and can't shoot 3's freely, it might be a little different.

100%

The Warriors had 2x top-5 players and 2x top-20 players. The Bulls would be badly outclassed.

Superstar or not, the one guy in history you want in that series to chase KD/Klay/Curry is Pippen. He’s the perfect defender for that series.

The 2017 team was much better than the 2016 team.

Warriors would constantly be in foul trouble with Jordan and Pippen constantly driving. Bulls in 5.

Bulls have the best player of all time though. MJ is equivalent in value to KD plus Steph. So it comes down to the rest of the roster which is close

I don’t think the bulls have the personnel to be able to shoot a high volume of 3s at a decent percentage and I just don’t think you can be successful playing non optimal ball against a team playing to the analytics. You’re not winning 2s vs 3s against competent competitor.

I’ll take it a step further and say they wouldn’t stand a chance. They’d get pummelled by the 2017 cavs who shot like 30 3s a game too
