Daryl Morey says he'd trade Ben for a top 40 player

Daryl Morey did an interview with Mike Missanelli and said that since Embiid is playing so well, he could trade Ben Simmons for a top 40 player that fits well next to Embiid.

Watch on YouTube

Maybe reality is setting in and Morey's asking price is finally starting to come down.

Edit: A quote for those that don't want to watch
Because Joel’s playing amazing, and has lifted us into probably 5%-plus title odds just on his play, now we might be able to do it with a top-40 player who’s a great fit,” Morey said. “...and maybe our future opportunities are open because we get some draft picks as part of it. So it helps our odds enough this year and we have a draft pick or young player who can help us into the future.

*Morey walking back to the mic*
"Just to clarify, I mean Top 40 All Time. Thank you."

6 months and he's moved his list from Top 30 to Top 40. Neat.

I don't think so, not after the season he's had.

Lmao no ****. All his top 25 talk was pure posturing. A lot of posters like me called this out months ago. I’m laughing at him using Embiid as an excuse.

Keep going lower Morey, with the way things are going he’ll end up settling for a G League player. I’m still waiting for the Morey jock riders to make an appearance in this thread and spin this.

Haha but I was reassured over and over again that Morey was being proven right and he was that much closer to landing a Beal/Brown/Ingram level of player.

The whole Im willing to lower what I'm looking for in return because of how well Embiid is playing, makes zero sense as well. Its not like Embiid's level of play this year came as a surprise and out of nowhere. The dude was 2nd in MVP voting last year.

This has literally been the entire argument against what Morey has been doing from the beginning. When you have a legit MVP candidate, you dont just sit and have a max contract taking up cap but not play him. You should always try to maximize every year you have a MVP candidate.

Morey already softening the blow to Sixer fans when they realize he's not going to trade Simmons.

Truly, Morey couldn't have played this worse. He's now getting back to where Ben's real value was closer to and the offers he was likely getting all along in the beginning, but now he's probably lost the ability to get some teams to sweeten the pot a bit more for him like they might have been willing to do this past summer.

Its confusing Darryl would cite Joels play as a reason for moving from a top 25 player to top 40 player in less than a few weeks.

We all knew Joel was capable of this level of play on both sides of the ball. The negative consequence of not trading Ben earlier is that Joel is logging 32.7 minutes per game (the second highest amount of his career). It doesnt make much sense for his short, medium & long term health, especially for a player that was nicknamed "The Process" for his first 3 years because of health reasons (and legitimate big man concerns).

sounds like morey is looking for a reasonable excuse to soften his stance

Would love to see a Venn Diagram of the people previously calling Morey totally unreasonable and the people now laughing at him for lowering the asking price.

I would just trade him for Brogdon, who would fit in perfectly. I know he's somewhat injury prone but try to pry someone else like Holiday or Turner or a first or something.

Question for anyone who knows.

When it comes to talking Ben Simmons trade, I haven't heard Elton Brand's name brought up once. Always Morey.

Isn't Brand technically the GM? Does he do anything there lol

In reality it seems like the whole think has been all about posturing from ownership as well. Maybe they were hoping some desperate team would not only be willing to take on Simmons, but also Harris's contract. I like Tobias and what he provides, but he's a 3rd option being paid 1st option money. I saw a following deal that was thrown out regarding this hoopla around Sacramento and their owner being desperate for that playoff push and 1 trade seemed interesting:

Sacramento: Tobias Harris, Ben Simmons
Philadelphia: Maurice Harkless, Tristan Thompson, De'Aaron Fox, Harrison Barnes

Kings solve that guard quagmire and build around Hield+Haliburton for that back court as Tyrese's game has made Fox expendable. They also address the perimeter issues as Simmons can flourish with a bunch of shooters around plus Tobias's deal will expire when Tyrese's extension kicks in.

Philly not only gets out of the Simmons headache, but they get a guy in Barnes who can practically offer what Harris's deal does but for half the price and on a depreciating cap hit that expires next year, it's really beneficial. Fox fits in nicely next to Maxey and they could flip Fox if a Harden S&T happens. Thompson is expiring filler and they could recirculate his cap hit to a team that has a player on a lower cap hit, but needs cap relief and they get under the luxury tax surprisingly.

I just want this BS to be done with(pun intended) as quite frankly you can't have 1/3 of your cap sheet being occupied by a dude that's not honouring his contract.

It's too bad he didn't do the Brogdon deal b/c once he got extended he's not allowed to be dealt until the off-season. If they were smart they'd have done a 3-way deal with Detroit for Brogdon and Jerami Grant using George Hill's partially guaranteed deal but oh well.
