I’m watching this Packers game wondering how the hell a sports franchise is surviving in a city that small and in the middle of no where? Green Bay makes small NBA markets like Memphis and New Orleans look like NYC. Also, how do they keep a superstar like Rodgers there and Favre before him?

GB is as small of a market as they get and GB is one of the NFL's most popular teams.

But ya just goes to show the major difference between the NFL and NBA when it comes to marketing. Another big difference between the NFL and NBA, just look at Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.

Arguably the two biggest young stars in the league at the moment. One plays for Kansas City and the other plays for Buffalo. There was no media push to get these guys to "big market" teams. There was really no doubt that they would stay with their teams.

Market size really has no baring when it comes to most things with the NFL.

The NFL will probably change one day, just need some super insecure baby like Shaq/LeBron/KD to start it.

If a NBA team only played 1 game per week their ratings would go up.

I dont think it will matter. The NFL is just a completely different animal. There are just so many differences between the NFL and NBA.

Sure and their ratings still wouldnt come close to the NFL. Football is just a far more popular sport in the US, its not close.

Green Bay wins because they have Tim Duncan, I mean Aaron Rodgers.

The biggest difference that would change the NBA dramatically is that NFL teams can franchise one player indefinitely, so they can keep a QB forever.

Actually, they already had one - Eli Manning. Whined and cried that he wouldn't play for the team that drafted him (I believe it was the Chargers), unitl he finally got his way.

The NFL plays from August to first week in January. It's not as big of a commitment time-wise as the NBA. You would have been better off comparing MLB and the NBA.

Did the Bucks just not win one from the same market? NFL doesn't have max contracts so star players stay with there team.

Plus the biggest difference is the sport itself. With a roster of 53 players and guys playing only offense or defense, it takes much more that 2/3 superstars to win a championship.

This isn't correct. He said before the draft he would refuse to play for San Diego.

That wasn't the first time and it isnt something that is common (also not exactly how it went down). Elway did the same thing back in 1983. Told the Colts prior to the draft that he didnt want to play for them. Eli did the same thing (told them prior to the draft). But again that wasn't new and wasn't the start of some new trend.

I mean Trevor Lawrence was one of the most hyped QBs in quite sometime and got drafted and plays for Jacksonville.

the question you should be asking is why cant nba teams keep their stars and the simple answer is basketball players have way too much power.

Oklahoma City had a well supported sports franchise during there run.

A huge difference is revenue.

In the NFL most revenue is from their massive national TV deal. As this gets split evenly every team operates with a relatively similar budget.

Also, as every game is a national TV game you can be just as famous playing anywhere.

(GB isn't really that small of a market as it's essentially also Milwaulkee - as there's only 8 home games all year, mostly on weekends it's easy for most of the fans to commute a distance to games).

It's a combination of multiple factors.

1. In the NFL contracts aren't guaranteed, so most of the time players will sign for the most money and financial security unlike the NBA where players can and do accept less money
2. There is a hard cap and no salary cap in the NFL, so teams can pony up to keep their best players
3. Teams can franchise players, which to an extent removes the threat of a player leaving a team for nothing


there is a lot of things the CBA in the NFL has that makes players less likely to leave on their own

Packers are one of the best and most popular/historic franchises.

The NFL does not succeed in all small markets.

Look at Detroit or Jacksonville.

17-game schedule vs. 82-game schedule
revenue sharing vs. limited revenue sharing
hard cap vs. soft cap
league television contract vs. league and local television contracts

Many of these differences give the large markets a big advantage in the NBA, but not as much in the NFL. Not having a maximum salary in the NFL is not a huge deal in the NFL with a hard cap and fewer guaranteed contracts, while the NBA artificially holds down the salaries of the top stars and in effect, give the teams with those players more cap space to use on other players. Just think how the Lakers, Warriors, Nets, Bucks and Nuggets would be affected if they had to pay LeBron, Curry, Durant, Giannis or Jokić $50 million or $60 million a year with a hard cap.
