Hawks Looking For First Round Pick And Starter for John Collins

What is going on in Atlanta? He seems like a really good player, high efficiency, solid on all stats. His contract seems solid considering his numbers. For me he is a perfect player for Trae Young.
The Atlanta Hawks have set an asking price for John Collins and, surprisingly, it's not all that high of a price. Atlanta is looking for a first-round pick and starting caliber player in return for Collins.
The Hawks already traded Cam Reddish to the New York Knicks and appear open to making even more moves. Atlanta is looking to reset their cap sheet, in what has been a disappointing season. Bogdan Bogdanovic and Danilo Gallinari are both reportedly available, as well.
Collins has averaged 16.8 points and 7.9 rebounds this season. He's also shooting a career-best 41.4% from behind the arc. The Hawks re-signed Collins to a five-year, $125 million contract this offseason.
Jerami Grant of the Detroit Pistons has been mentioned as a trade target for the Hawks, while they have also inquired with the San Antonio Spurs on Derrick White. The Spurs have been linked to Collins in free agency.

Hmm another possibility is to trim salary to go after Harden in the off season?
I shudder to think about it watching a Harden and Trae backcourt take turns drawing fouls every other possession.

Something along the lines of White + Thad + Chicagos Pick?

Not a good defender. Pascal Siakam would be great with Young.

Decent player that's going to want vastly overpaid on his next contract.

It is almost like rumors are being spread by other teams and picked up on by media/bloggers. Collins would only be moved for a true star player. He's not going anywhere unless that happens.

So Hawks tanked....got a bunch of young talent with top tier picks...and now are selling them all off because they decided to overpay Gallo and Bogey?
Wouldnt you want to sell off veterans like Gallo/Bogey and keep young guys like Reddish/Collins who can grow together for the long haul? I feel like they are doing this backwards.

Let’s define “starter”

I've become a fan of Collins. He's got some star talent with his athleticism and skill set, but he's also proven to be pretty tough and capable of doing a lot of dirty work. He's competitive and he showed a lot in the playoffs last year. He's also had his role reduced every year in Atlanta. Baby steps backwards from his perspective.
I can see the Hawks just simply wanting to upgrade defensively around Trae. Collins isn't a bad defender, but there are some tools he lacks on that end. He's not big enough to make a defensive impact as a center, he's a neutral help defender, and he's not a stopper on the perimeter. Good effort and athleticism, less than ideal size, length. So he's not the perfect guy to play with Trae. If they can get a defensive starter and a chance at some more young talent, I wouldn't be crazy surprised for them to make that deal.

The framework of this deal makes some kind of sense. If Thadd still has something in the tank, he's the perfect fit there. White could be a good backcourt mate for Collins. San Antonio could make great use of Collins skillset and probably give him more to do offensively. I think it would make Atlanta better this year. Maybe it helps them get back to the playoffs. But White is 27 and Thad is 33. They'd have to have bigger plans for the draft pick and how it would effect their long term plans around 23-year-old Trae. It's become unclear who is part of Atlanta's long term plan. Hunter? Okongwu?

That would be a stupidly low return for a player like Collins. Just tailor the offense more towards Collins who is putting up efficient numbers.
Like wouldn't be that be the common sense approach first before looking to move him for less talent?

Hunter? Okongwu?
I would consider both Okongwu and Hunter as untouchable

Hawks in:
Jerami Grant, Derrick White, McDermott, Cory Joseph
Spurs in:
John Collins, Kevin Huerter
Pistons in:
Deandre Hunter, Thad Young (expiring), Delon Wright (expiring), two first round picks (Spurs and Hawks each send one)
I wonder if something like this might work for each team.

I agree he should only be moved for a star player, especially if he wants to be here. Despite rumblings he's unhappy with his role, it doesn't seem like he is pouting or letting it affect his play or effort.

I love trade ideas where the Hawks get bent over and used like a two dollar whore in Dallas and then people are perplexed when Hawks fans are like seriously dude. Seriously dude? You really think the Hawks would give up three starters and a first round pick for two bums in McDermott and Joseph and much lesser talent in White and Grant?

Easy buddy. Relax, you'll live longer. Take a deep breath.
Those three starters haven't gotten you too far this season.

I commented on this in another thread, but that rumor for Collins sounds like less than Houston wants for Wood. Does that sound right?

Sixers trade: Simmons / Harris
Hawks trade: Collins / Bogdanovic / Gallinari
Trade successful.
