Reggie Jackson galloping down court is a travel, right?

You can't dribble, jump in the air and have 2 feet off the ground, land whilst keeping the same dribble right?
To me that's just a blatant violation
Or am I wrong, and it's this sequence not a travel?

He never picked up his dribble nor did he carry the ball (by nba standards) so it's not a travel. It doesn't matter if he jumps while dribbling. My 2 cents anyways.

No that's not a travel. He's dribbling with a little sauce, but it's still just a dribble.

I think this board would be a better place if a mod pinned the rules in a post along with some helpful pieces of context to go with it.
The nba does a terrible job of awareness surrounding the rules, I don’t blame anybody for not understanding at all

I've seen several players do this from time to time, DeMar DeRozan among them. Not a travel even by a strict reading of the rules.

The only way its a travel is if he picks up his dribble... you could argue that he scooped/palmed the ball a bit more than normal on those dribbles but certainly a thing we see players do a lot, especially on cross over type plays.

Agree but, on a different note, it apparently
is a violation if you punch the ball while dribbling.
Not like punch it into the stands. But use a fist to dribble is a violation. They called it a few weeks ago and I was like wtf?

First I've seen of this... I dig.
It was like Jackson was just so damn antsy for the deciding play. Kind of like how thousands in the crowd probably felt and many more watching at home.
Whether it is actually a travel or not is irrelevant to me... I'm just glad we live in a world where a travel is NOT called in that situation.

I thought you had to keep 1 foot on the floor at all times (or the appearance of) unless you were going into shooting motion
I guess it makes sense if you were dribbling and someone was lying on the floor in front of you and you had to keep dribbling

Closer to palming, but I think no whistle was warranted

i mean, the galloping is probably ok by the book but it just highlights that he's blatantly carrying the ball every time even more on the gallops
when people watch old gametape and think the players looked stiff or unskilled compared to the smoothness of today its because they would never even think to attempt some stupid move like that because they can't palm the ball to get that level of control. imagine if he was trying to do that with a legal dribble lol

You can't really gallop without carrying, maybe that's the violation I'm thinking of

this sort of thing happens every other possession in the nba, just in less exaggerated fashion. they don't call travels in the backcourt. technically a travel, but who cares

So you agree it's technically a travel?

I don't know if that was a travel. But I do know that whole sequence was cool as ****.

I mean simply running or jogging and dribbling means you will have both feet off the ground. So literally this happens dozens of times in every game you've ever watched.

It's not a travel.
Traveling rules only apply after the ball is gathered. It's a common misconception, but you can take 20 steps in between dribbles, do jumping jacks, whatever, as long as the dribble is still live.
I do agree with others about carrying but unfortunately they dont even enforce that at lower levels anymore. Go to even a middle school game and you'll see most players carry the ball even just to bring it up the court these days.

But it's akin to a jumping motion when you have the ball in your possession, two feet leaving ground, then two feet land back on the ground, with the ball in your possession.
That's a travel
