I'm not sure how accurate it is.
But it's a great show and a must watch for any basketball fan.

I mean Jerry West is literally suing them on the grounds of their inaccuracies for defamation of character. I personally haven't watched it yet.

Maybe you should try watching it then.
I don't feel like they even portrayed West negatively. Just as a miserable guy because of his past failures that badly wanted to win. He's kind of rude/arrogant and swears a lot but it didn't seem Iike anything overly negative. At least to me.

It is a good show though. Really impressed by John C. Reily. Didn't think he had the range but he's a solid actor

Nice to see this thread being open... I'm planning on starting watching the show this week.
It would be really cool if people write their thoughts here.

It's way exaggerated. I knew that was gonna be the case before the show. It's an HBO show. They don't give two sh's about historic accuracy, trust that. They're going for salaciousness to get people buzzing about it. And I'm not saying that salacious stuff didn't happen to the 80s Lakers (or the 70s or 80s, in general), but you can bet that some of the most controversial stuff on the show is probably exaggerated at least 3 notches above what really happened.
RE: 80s, Jordan had a story from his rookie year where he knocked on a hotel door where his teammates were partying and they had hookers and coke and weed, etc. He knew enough to get out of there. The Chicago Bulls at that time were a mediocre to poor team (Mike was brand new yet) and they were partying w/ ho's and coke. Spencer Haywood in 1980 was coked out so bad he couldn't be played and he couldn't catch any of Magic's passes when he did. I've seen this in numerous old games from that season. He came from a Jazz team that had more than one guy on coke. Iirc, one guy on their team died in a car wreck while supposedly on coke. It was leaguewide the further you go back. Judging by the Jazz and Bulls of that era, it's probably a safe bet that the Lakers upped that scene a few pegs, but in general, they were wilder times. And if one thing has messed up more Laker stars than anything else, it has been women, not drugs. And then again, it wasn't that many years ago when two morons brought GUNS to a locker room. And in 93, some Trailblazers got into a little jacuzzi problem w/ some supposedly iffy girls agewise.

The book the show is based on really portrays Kobe as a player not ready/too immature to be a star for season 2. Season 2 is going to be crazy to see Shaq/Kobe.
Saw the first few episodes. My wife lost interest by episode 3. Got to catch up on it on my own. Haha

I watched the series, and it was pretty entertaining. I would say a good 30-40 percent of it is not true and after doing fact checking but I still enjoyed watching the show. The acting was great, and every character had their own interesting story. Surprisingly I found Magic the least interesting character on the show.

What's the appeal of watching a show based on real events that makes things up? Why not just watch fiction instead? I know some people that watch it and I don't get it. People on that team don't even like the show lol.

It’s a great f***ing show, I love it! The inaccuracies are minor and don’t bother me a bit. I have a feeling those characters are really like that.
Jerry West’s portrayal as a miserable genius seems fairly accurate to me

thats how I really picture him when I watch his interviews and his propensity to threaten to quit the moment things don’t go his way in the front office.
Larry Bird always being in Magic’s head as Darth Vader is hilarious, I highly recommend watching the show.

Because it's entertainment. If you can get past the fact that it's not completely accurate then it's a fun show.
If you want something more accurate then watch a documentary (but even most those have biases).

This is my favorite show on tv along with Succession. Absolutely amazing characters led by John C Reilly playing Jerry Buss and Jason Clarke as Jerry West. Brilliant!

Hamilton, The Patriot, Glory Road, and the Pursuit of Happyness all took artistic liberties to make events more dramatic and entertaining. Most stories based on real events take artistic liberties.
They’re not documentaries.
