IF the Celtics don't make the Finals...what do they do in the offseason?

Post#1 » by Cubbies2120 » Mon May 16, 2022 10:08 pm

Obviously the Celtics are favorites to make it out of the East according to betting odds, but in the case that they don't...

Do you run it back with the same core? Do you trade a major piece? Who would be a realistic upgrade to push the Celtics over the edge and into the Finals (if they don't make it this year)?

I wouldn't mess too much with the roster that seemed to find its way under the new coach as the season progressed. I would make a couple tweaks on the margin, but wouldn't do anything too drastic. Maybe adding a bench player who can set up the offense and get the ball to guys in their spots.

Use the Al Horford half guaranteed contract plus sacrifice depth to improve

I feel like the Heat are the favorite. They shouldn’t change much though.

In this hypothetical, what causes them to struggle against Miami and exactly how badly do they lose by?

You continue to build around your 24 and 25 year old stars. Tatum in particular is going to be top 5 as guys like Curry, LeBron, KD, and Kawai, decline over the next few seasons. Tatum's best chance to win is when he is 26-28 or 29, when his bbiq should max and ideally match up to his athleticism.

This is one team that should "run it back"

I dont know if there is much we can do. All our guys are young (pre-prime except maybe smart) outside of Al, who is eventually going to age out. Unless we bleed picks, which I dont like doing, there isnt a major way to upgrade the roster

I actually think Miami are looking good too, but the bookies do favour the Celtics ($1.45 vs $2.57 for Miami via an Aus betting site)

They have to get better regardless, because Milwaukee next year with Middleton is going to be better than they are this year. They don't need huge moves, just a more consistent perimeter scorer off the bench. And Tatum needs to up even another level.

it seems like its their year to be honest. The nets had two great players but were not a powerhouse due to a multitude of reasons, milwaukee was without their 2nd best player and my guess is Lowry remains hobbled in the ecf.

They rest. Come back. Hope the young guys get it done next season.

They're playing great basketball... but they can lose, like everyone else. You don't destroy a team that is showing up great every game and putting a ton of effort even in losses.

another wing or two, someone like duncan robinson to add some bench depth. They could use a 6th man scorer off the bench, but these are all luxuries. maybe a decent veteran ring chaser with a little bit left in his tank.
