Centers don't get Max deals anymore unless they're MVP caliber. 15-20 million is the going rate for an above average center. Having said that someone will probably offer it to him and Phoenix will match.

I wouldn't say "deserve" but $131m/4 is not much in today's cap for a guy like him, and he will get such an offer this summer, especially since the Suns haven't indicated that they would match a max offer.

Ayton doesn't deserve a max, but multiple teams will justifiably offer him one and the suns will too or else they won't have or retain his services, so he's worth a max contract. This is what realgm is telling me.

Players who get manhunted in the playoffs should never get a max, unless you're a top 5-10 offensive player in the league, which he is far from.

I think a Ayton to Utah; Gobert to GSW; Wiseman to Pheonix could somehow happen with more pieces involved. Utah needs to move Gobert for better spacing. GSW needs more defense upfront. Pheonix can gets deeper team to somewhat keeps playing with some draft picks coming back.

My biggest worry is about his body holding up. If this ESPN article is true and he only gets 2 hours of sleep/night, I don't think he's worth the risk.
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33898958/deandre-ayton-phoenix-suns-video-games?platform=amp

every day, he'll settle down for several hours -- at least four or five -- to play NBA 2K.

Ayton typically wakes up around 6 a.m. after only getting about two hours of sleep. There's time for a quick round of gaming after eating breakfast, then he's off to practice. Then it's back home to finish talking trash and practicing moves on the virtual court. On game days, Ayton is focused, but that schedule still includes time for video games.

I've done a lot of reading on sleep science. Aside from the long term disease and cognitive risks of lack of sleep, he's increasing his susceptibility to injury, he'll have slower judgment times (drowsy driving is just as bad as drunk driving), and sleep plays an integral role in learning, memory, and muscle memory.

Two hours of sleep per night is basically Lamar Odom level of an athlete not caring about his body.
At the end of the day, it's not about wins and losses. Teamwork, fair play, and good sportsmanship make champions of us all.

Go arbitrary assortment of athletes! Beat the other arbitrary assortment of athletes or my mood will suffer!

Ayton was the Suns best player en route to the finals last year. He's a dominant off ball player on both ends. It wasn't his fault the Suns collectively choked to Dallas, he's a secondary player who plays off primary ballhandlers. Their primary ballhandlers **** the bed.

If you're not a good team, you don't want to max Ayton. If you have a great team in contending position, with strong perimeter playmakers, he would be an invaluable addition.

We've seen how good we are in important games with McGee, Saric, Biyombo, etc...they can't do anything on offense, turn it over, are useless. It will be interesting. A lot of Suns fans can't stand him and there are maybe 35-40% who like him. But I don't think those who hate him watch many other Cs and only compare him to Embiid, Towns, Jokic (though to be fair, they are the max guys).

Part of it is when we lose because of Paul or Booker, no one wants to blame them so Ayton usually somehow becomes the scapegoat...all season long.

I don't think he necessarily worth the max, but I'd certainly match one rather than let him walk.

This is always a tough one, it's like just because someone isn't as good as that type of player doesn't mean they are bad.

Seems like he shouldn't want to return to the Suns.

The bar for who deserves a max is pretty low so, yes under these conditions he deserves a max contract.

You can chose between offering him a 5 year max or matching a frontloaded 3+1 offer sheet from another team.
Losing him or doing a S&T is not an option

In this day and age, 4/$130 doesn't even seem like that much. At least when talking NBA.I'd gladly take that and live comfortably for the rest of my life.

My opinion: the NBA should stop rewarding sunken cost contracts when dealing with max deals. If Ayton was drafted in the late first he would get $20M a year.
why should a player like Ayton be drafted so late?
His combination of size, athleticism and skills is going to net a high lottery pick in every draft.
So, what happened?

The kid is good and still young. He might not deserve it right now but some team will bet on him and offer it.

What does "deserve" mean in case of cap allocation for specific skill and position? he's not a 1st or 2nd option, but he's a great defensive center, who can body bigs, protect the rim, and go out on the perimeter, he's also good P&R center, is he Embiid or Jokic? 2 tiers below, should a team with cap space, young perimeter player in the beginning of his journey, max Ayton to pair him with their perimeter star, absolutely yes.

Absolutely not. Someone might give it to him, but he absolutely isn't worth it.
