Who's the better 3&D player at their peak? Klay or Shane?

Not even close....I love Battier,very good role player but Klay was a all star caliber player in this role in his prime

I don't think Klay classifies as a 3&D guy, as a 1st/2nd option on offense

Klay is a legit All-Star at his peak, so...yeah.

Battier might have the edge defensively, but Klay's contribution on the other end more than makes up for any discrepancy.

First, are you talking peak or career?

If we're talking career, Battier has a career 3P+ of 108, while Klay is 117, so obviously Klay is quite a bit better on the 3 point shooting side. Defensively, Battier had all-defensive caliber defense, while Klay IMO is a bit overrated defensively and is really more just above average, though he did have one great peak year -- to put some numbers to it, Battier has a career DRTG of 105, Klay 108, where the average is ~110, lower is better.

Put another way, on a scale of 1-10, if 5 is average, for their career, I'd give Klay an easy 10 for 3p shooting and a 6-6.5 for defense, while Battier would be like a 9.5 on defense (not quite a 10) and like a 7.5-8 on 3p shooting (not quite the % or the volume to be one of the absolute top 3pt shooters, though he was playing just before the 3p revolution really kicked off, so he'd probably avg. more on a current team). Generally, I would say Klay's 3pt shooting was slightly better than Battier's defense, but Battier's 3pt shooting was quite a bit better than Klay's defense.

For their peak, it'd be more like 10 and 8.5-9 for Klay (2015 Klay was 125 3P+/104 DRTG) and 9.5-10 and 10 for Battier -- 2007 Battier was a beast, 118 3P+/102 DRTG.

Overall, though, Klay was obviously far more offensively minded and had solid defense, while Battier was more defensively minded while still being very good at 3pt shooting. Kinda just depends on what you're looking for/fits better with your team.

Klay was only a "legit" all-star and Battier wasn't because voters value scoring above all else. If voters valued defense as much as scoring (which they should), you could easily make a case for Battier being the more valuable player. To that point, Battier has a higher career WS/48, BPM, VORP, etc.

Okay in his prime was better. As post prime role players, idk Shane was probably better. He didn't have all those injuries

Looks like Melo was pretty normal in that game with Shane on the floor, and was beyond on fire when he was off.

Battier has a higher 3P attempt rate than Klay. He just shot a lot fewer field goal attempts in general.

Exactly. A 3 and D player is a great defender who can stay on the court because he can knock down an open catch-and-shoot 3. Klay is a star offensive player who has been a good defender.

Weird the link screwed up. But yes, he scored 20 of the 50 when shane was on the floor. he shot over 80% when Shane was off the floor.So yeah shane reduced his shooting by about 30%!
