The Mavs can't make the mistake of thinking they're close
Amazing run for the Mavs, but I hope their success this year doesn't lead the front office to thinking this roster is Championship caliber. I think they need to make some major upgrades to the roster, and they should probably let Brunson walk (or S&T).

Mavs are still healing from the Porzingis trade. They bet on him being a championship piece.
It has been written...

They could give him $20m per year and destroy their roster flexibility for the next few years.

They have the superstar , aggressive owner and salary flexibility to build.

Yeah. This team sucks. It was Luka carrying a bunch of mediocre role players on his back.
This team gives me 2007 Cavs vibes and I don't like it.

Mavs need a Zach Lavine. I always thought the perfect running mate for Luka is Klay Thompson. Superior 3 point shooter and above average perimeter defender. Can score 20 in his sleep and probably 25 with Luka feeding him. If they can’t sign and trade Brunson just resign him. By no means should they let him walk.

Yeah it would be really stupid to overreact to this run and give Brunson a massive contract.

Did you even check their salaries? They are getting their flexibilty back in two years, even WITH Brunson at 20m

Luka just needs one other guy. Like not even a superstar just a fringe all-star. Porzingis was washed. Give him like a Bane, Bam or a Middleton and he can get it done.
But if you end up putting Luka with a legit star like these other players do (Lebron, Durant, etc.), and that's a dynasty. Imagine Luka with Jokic or KD.

Two years of a Hardaway, Dinwiddie, Brunson core?

I’m certain the Mavs know they over achieved. I’d like us to get more talent, get more athletic and get an actual big man. Luka absolutely needs to become a better shooter as well as improve his conditioning. If those two thing happen the league is his.

Re: The Mavs can't make the mistake of thinking they're close
one thing i think they would really benefit from is having a great off-ball 3 point threat. and with that i don't just mean catch and shoot players, i mean someone where you run actions for them off-ball for shots on the move which divides the defense's attention. lebron usually had one with ray allen, korver, and even lesser options like JR smith or KCP. i think it helps mix up the "heliocentric" offense, because dallas' shooters were all very stationary which just allowed for more attention to be paid to luka.
with that said, i don't think they need an overhaul or to uproot the roster, they just need to add incremental pieces like that.

100% facts. I have been saying it for a while. Mavs need just one Klay Thompsonesque that doesn’t stand still. They also need to force Luka to get in shape so they can speed up their game.

They have 1 superstar and a bunch of role players. No one close to being a fringe all star.

Luka & Jokic would get destroyed on defense. Imagine Luka & Tatum.

him, or someone like duncan robinson. they probably wouldn't get 30+ minutes a game because their defense isn't nearly as good as klay's but it would at least add a wrinkle to their offense for ~20-22 minutes a night.

I think there is too much overlap with bullock and dfs. The mavs could use a 2 way wing that can get his own shot and attack close outs.

Joker is an underrated defender (prob cause he's European) but Luka and Tatum would be nasty too.
